Gameplay is great.
Story is a mess and it's unfinished.

It's worth it if you can get it for less than 10 bucks which isn't that hard to do nowadays.

Yes. The gameplay makes up for what else it lacks. Don't be like me though and just plow through with basic equipment. Game really got fun for me after I beat it and actually started using all the different stuff you can use.

yes and no.

the gameplay is great, but it re-uses the areas so much, it can't help but feel repetitive.

the story has some interesting elements, but it's unfinished and, and sometimes the missions aren't that engaging.

the Skulls, as an enemy unit, also end up feeling more annoying than fun and/or interesting, IMO.

I think it would have been better if it was just more Ground Zeros, where you open up more parts of the base as the game goes on, and didn't waste time on meaningless stuff like Mother Base, which only had one powerful moment in the game, iirc (mission 43).

It's fun, but it's blatantly unfinished (to the point where there's literally a major plot thread that opens up and then is never resolved). The parts of the story that are there are very poorly paced and disappointing. Fully two thirds of the "main missions" feel like the side missions from Ground Zeroes (which is by far a better game, dollar for dollar and hour for hour).

Needed way more cutscenes, more consistent characterization for established characters, and more locations. The engine of the game is phenomenal and it plays like a dream, but the content just isn't as good as it should have been.

You can find the cutscene that ties off that plot thread on YouTube. No You shouldn't have to do that for a game to feel complete but at least it's there.

It's a good video game. The problem is that the fan base has rightfully had their expectations set higher than that. The story in it is just not very good plus is told very poorly. All of the recurring characters are bastardizations of themselves. It has no business being affiliated to the story telling of the first 3 games. The second game literally makes Orwell look like an amateur crybaby.

It doesn't help that Kojima was literally so burned out on the series that his main goal in making it was to get fired.

It's sadly not even a full cutscene. A lot of what happens is just concept art. It's a shame that it's so extremely and blatantly unfinished. I remember how when the game released, some people tried to claim that "Mission 51 was always meant to be a collector's edition bonus CD with no gameplay, and the game was finished on schedule"

It's also clear from the content that exists in that video, at least from my perspective, that the game was meant to have a lot more cinematic moments and interactive bits within the story. The whole idea of Snake's head injury messing with his perception and messing with how he sees color, plus the fact the cutscene set you up for a shootout, makes it seem like there were a lot of concepts that were still being developed and added into the game.

Because the final product has almost none of that cinematic flair from earlier games. The final game doesn't even have as much cinematic flair as Ground Zeroes or the Chapter 51 lost mission.

Clearly, clearly, clearly it's unfinished, and I blame Konami for forcing it out anyway. I believe Kojima missed deadlines and all that, but bro it's the fifth game in a massive franchise, I think he's earned some leeway.

Never heard thr bit about him wanting to get fired. I heard he had his hands tied by Konami cause he was taking too long. Also heard this game was how he always wanted metal gear to be (gameplay Wise. Being able to infiltrate from many different ways) but tech was too limited back in the day

He's been saying he wanted out of this series since MGS2.

The dude went over budget hiring a Hollywood has been over just letting the series mainstay come back like everyone wanted.

I can't think of any more obvious an example of career suicide. He also knew Konami needed him more than he needed them.

He still made a game that almost won game of the year. If he wanted career suicide it wasn't a very good attempt. A better attempt woulda been making solid snake become a villain and having Raiden kill him off. Now that woulda been career suicide.

He went over budget and got himself fired while still accomplishing the goal of giving the gameplay mechanics he was fascinated with after GTA5. It was a highly successful attempt, you just don't understand how seriously these companies enforce their budget.

Edit: Also, as dumb as the idea you postulated is, if Kojima did that he would have been able to do it in a way that would have had fans talking. Instead he gave us a sterile, uninteresting story that no one even cared about.

He didn't want to work for Konami anymore and after MGS5, he didn't.

I just wonder why even try making a good game if that's the goal.

I know he wanted to work on other shit besides mgs but it was clear he was still passionate enough about it to put forth some effort.

Well a lot of the time burned out artists don't want to stick it to their fans, but if you cost your employer too much money then you're kind of screwing the person you're contentious with on the way out.

Edit: I do see your point though. Career suicide was a poor choice of words because his career as a game creator was untarnished. But I maintain that he was done with Konami and the MGS world as a whole.

Pretty sure he didn't want to get fired. Dude was pretty much next in line to run Konami, probably would have had the top position a few years after MGSV if things went differently. He overestimated his worth to a company that was ready to step out (or diminish their role) of the video game industry already.

Honestly, yeah. MGS4 was an absolutely perfect ending for the series. I never understood why they thought MGSV was necessary, unless it was going to be some kind of sneaky, clever remake of MG1 and MG2. That's what I was truly hoping for.

Sadly, not the case.

The thing is, he was even burned out by the time MGS4 came out. That's why he was tying loose end after loose end up to the point that it was getting ridiculous. (Meryl x Johnny lol.)

Like, the dude officially said he wanted MGS2 to he his last contribution. Then he compromised by giving us the best gaming prequel of all time because he still wasn't interested in concluding things. Like, it's obvious that by the time the death threats started rolling in, he just caved and made MGS4 pure corny fan service.

It's funny to me anyone can be dense enough to think MGS5 was an actual effort to make a new installment, and not just piss around with Konami's money until he got the axe.

Honestly, I'm a sap, so giving every conceivable character a happy ending is kind of exactly what I wanted from it. I still hold MGS4 up as the best in the series, and the best game of a completely stacked PS3/Xbox 360 generation. The nostalgia tripping, the fanservice, and the oh-so-satisfying conclusion elevated it beyond any other story-based game I've ever played. No other video game has ever fulfilled me so completely on so many levels.

And it was fun, to boot.

Yeah, it doesn't bother me or make me angry or anything, I just always thought a lot of his choices in the end were strange and borderline absurd. The thing I respect about MGS4 is that it was 100% made for his fan base. There are things that happen in it that only land as well as they do because they're "Your wish has been granted" tier gaming moments, but they aren't nearly as impactful if you didn't grow up playing all of his games and there's something very special about that.

MGS5 on the other hand is just nothing, story wise. It has very little value to the overall lore.

I still can't put 4 above the first 3 as fun as it is though.

Yeah. I speak from the perspective of somebody who has been in love with the series since Metal Gear Solid on the PS1, and I do mean in love. My brother and I had a yearly tradition that ran for at least 15 years where we'd schedule a time to get together and run through MGS, MGS2, MGS3, and MGS4--adding each one to the list as new entries came out.

He would play it, and I would watch it. So for me, MGS is alllll about the story and characters. I've played through all of them at some point or another, but my experience with the series is like 80% as an audience member, not the one playing, which also colored my opinion of MGSV significantly.

with Kojima, assuming he started writing MGS2 in the 90s, the stuff about superfluous info people would focus on as news, that was already a reality (I was there!); it wasn't predicting the internet, just one with more trash.

stuff about shaping society in a way they (the Patriots) wanted is something that has always been around, with providing selective info, propaganda, etc.

I'm not criticizing the game or its themes, btw, but I think people overstate how "visionary" it is.
