They did, but the point is that the type of guy TC outlined in the OP as well as the guy commonly depicted in harem anime just wouldn't be the one to get a harem at all. Exceptions exist, but they are very, very rare.
It's usually the competitive, driven, dominant, fun-to-be-around, very wealthy, and capable-of-protecting-if-someone-throws-down types who can do so 'cause not only are they desirable, they can also provide.

Seriously. Most harems happen because the girls know that over 90% of women are fighting for the top 10% of guys. If they get one of those guys, damn straight they're gonna be willing to share for that security.
And no, personal perception of attractiveness is NOT the general/societal perception of attractiveness. Just 'cause you think your mate is a 10/10 doesn't mean that, generally speaking, they're considered that same score.

I'm not knocking them. But that's just how it is.

I've started watching muv luv 2012 and it started having a pretty compelling plot, I mean, apart from super tight pilot suits on young girls then it degraded to harem.

it's even worse when the fandom pretends it's not harem for some reason (sao)

I posted this is in the counter post to this one without knowing this was the real one. Since more people are talking here and since this is something I dislike about them I will post here.

One of the things I hate about harem anime is the dude is always so the milquetoast loser. Like I don't want to them a perv but damn they are just so horrible. Oh I touched her hand.. my nose is bleeding. And while I have all these honeies to pick from. I only want this one who just happened to be who I met first. And who seems to like me the less.

What happens in real life harems is generally worse though.

The people who defend harem anime are the same ones who whined about Twilight being stupid because two hot supernatural dudes were fighting over a socially awkward average girl.

Not really seeing the correlation there. The people who hate harem anime say the exact same thing about Twilight.

Anyway, it really depends on the show for me. As far as anime goes, harems work best in comedies poking fun at the scenario rather than dramas trying to take it seriously. Kanojo mo Kanojo is one of my favorites, simply do to how absurd it is.

There's plenty of harem anime where the girls are genuinely developed and intricate characters and the main character is actually one with multiple good qualities. And the girls have good reasons for falling for the main character, even.

Or else, harem some like Amagami (based off the visual novel by the same name) where the anime covers the 6 different girls routes in 4 episode arcs. Well, mostly. There's some variances or mixes bergen their good and perfect ending, etc.

What Harem Manga, or Anime, have you actually seen? Most is pseudo-Harem at best, since they don't actually do anything together.

Even this Pseudo-Harem manga and anime can be done well, though -- in the case of Yonakano Reiji ni Harem wo!! (Midnight Harem).

Yep. I got the official Blu Ray release and it's so amazing. And I can send you some links if you want to try the translated fan patch. The game itself is hands down the best visual novel I've ever played. Even better than ones like Kara no Shoujo or The Fruit of Grisaia.
