I know there's a lot of poll options I'm missing, but whatever. Keeping it simple.

I think the only horror things I like are ones I like despite the horror part

like Resident Evil games are good, but I do not particularly enjoy when it spooks me

In theory, I really enjoy the mechanics of nervous tension and a well-crafted thrill, but in practice most horror doesn't do it for me, I'm either too jaded to find it spooky, or it gets under my skin too much to the point that I'm just not enjoying it

Other.

Horror books, great. Horror video games/movies, meh, unless they lean into comedy. Horror that focuses too much on slasher or gore is a no, unless it's for comedy purposes, again (see: Resident Evil)

Horror that is for jumpscares only resides in its own circle of hell.

Wow. I am the only exception vote for Horror Games only.

The first time I watched a horror movie was "The Ring" when I was 10. It scared me so much I was thinking about it at night for months afterwards. I knew right then that I should never watch another horror movie. Maybe it wouldn't have the same effect on me now but I never went back and it still doesn't seem like a smart choice to watch something that could impact me that way.

But I still can play horror games, it never had the same effect on me, I guess because game graphics won't quite achieve the same level of realism...? I like them not because of the scary stuff, but moreso because they tend to excel at atmosphere compared to most games. I like VR horror games too though I basically have to pause the instant anything scary comes up and can't last more than a few minutes even with that.

I like it sometimes but not often

I mean A Quiet Place = good, countless Insidious sequels = bad. It oftens feels as though there's a lot more of the latter than the former though.

Game wise I've recently enjoyed RE2 remake and the Outer Wilds DLC, and I love SH2 despite it causing some pretty awful sleepless nights when I was a teenager.

It depends.

For movies, if it's a thriller with minor horror elements, I love it. You can see my glowing praise for movies like Black Swan in the link in my sig. But if it gets to be too bloody and messy, I can get uncomfortable, and I don't particularly like things like decapitation.

It's the same sort of thing for games. I like some parts of Resident Evil, but not so much others. Not into Silent Hill at all because that's even more scary/violent.

So I guess I'm voting "Other."

I really enjoy the concept of fear as a design principle and how people explore that concept. I think its fun to read about horror. But I rarely enjoy playing a horror game or reading a creepypasta or watching a horror movie. A lot of the tropes bother me.

I avoid it pretty hard, with occasional exceptions for:
-Psychological horror only (Yume Nikki)
-Mystery-horror (When They Cry)

Hate jump scares, hate gore, hate body horror, sometimes I even have trouble with character death

i generally avoid it so i voted option 5, but i guess i've enjoyed several nominally horror works - resident evil 4, higurashi, parasite, get out, scream, silence of the lambs...

though i wouldn't really call any of them "straight-up" horror.

I enjoy reading stuff like this about horror because it's interesting to see how paths converge - because I watched "IT" when I was 6, and it did scar me for years but also I just kept wanting to watch more and more stuff that scared me. Just one of the many reasons horror is so interesting and fantastic to me.

My earliest horror memory was of A Nightmare on Elm Street. I slept on the floor for a week after seeing Freddy dragged Johnny Depp into his bed and turned him into a blood geyser.

Fast forward and it's one of my favorite horror movies of all time now!

I am ok with non-jump scares horror
But because those exist I just avoid the horror genre in general

And it's not like I am easily "scared" or something (well, at least not like people who find the Resident Evil series scary somehow)
I just hate jump scares
They are fucking lame

Although, come to think of it...
In 2010 or so I saw a movie called "The Ruins", It was in a pitch black (because of course it is) and I was watching it despite being tired and lacking a lot of sleep hours
Anyway after a hour or so into the movie I started feeling very uncomfortable. Felt dizziness and had to go outside and catch a breath
Not sure if it was just because of the movie, or combination of being tired + dark room with flashing lights...or all of them together

I am still mad that a shitty 5.9 movie made me feel this way but what can I do

Yeah, "months" was an understatement, it stayed on my mind for years I think. Hell, even to this day if I close my eyes at night and think about it...

I'm kind of torn because I actually think I'd like horror movies, I like the idea of subjecting myself to an experience that can have such an effect on me. But I don't want the effect to last longer than those 2 hours! I think there's a chance that I could watch that movie again today and be like "Wait, what? That's it? That's what young me was scared of??? It's just a tree in an empty field lmao????" but if I'm wrong then I don't wanna trigger the effects all over again lol

Yeah this (except I'm not bothered by body horror). I really don't like watching people get tortured/killed and that makes up a huge amount of the horror media I've seen.

Also this is admittedly a very pretentious take but lots of horror movies have super obvious socially conservative messaging that would make me want to avoid them even if I liked the content otherwise. One of the many reasons I loved Cabin in the Woods is because it very explicitly is about telling those themes to fuck off.

It takes a very special kind of horror medium to entice me. I don't like jump scares, don't like icky things, don't like high degrees of survival-oriented tension... and that knocks out the overwhelming majority of horror content.

I think I mostly prefer horror/comedy, but a lot of horror is humorous to me anyways even if it isnt meant to be. Tucker & Dale vs Evil is my favorite and its way more on the comedy side than horror. I always recommend that one whenever I can.
