he just played a stoic tough guy hellbent on vengeance. The shallow depth of the character shrunk the number of emotions he could convey

commodus on the other hand, cot dayum, now that was acting. Even though the movie never explicitly states it, this man had a troubled childhood. He was pampered and sheltered, and without a father figure to turn to he his mental matured stagnated. Joaquin perfects the sullen manchild yearning for validation from his people to fill the empty hole of never feeling a father's warmth

My point is his performance wasn't close to deserving of an academy award. He didn't even deserve the nomination. His competitors played characters with dimensionality to them. Tom Hanks's performance in Cast Away annihilated his

yea the oscars are explicitly for career recognition, not just the role.

crowe took a role that was campy: arnold, sly, jean-claude, seigal, norris, etc. all played tough guys, but crowe tried to put them in a Shakespearean(metaphorically) setting, so that's why he got the award.

also that movie had historical accuracy better than other movies. it didnt have the "Ben Hur" feel that a lot of 80s movies had.
