I was thinking about this earlier, and especially with regard to stuff like TLoU2 and TLJ (among other things) where a lot of the rhetoric from some of the weirder elements of the fanbase has recurring stuff like "betrayed us", "tricked us", as well as a severe hostility towards the concept of "subverting expectations" as though what you expect is some sacred thing that needs to be protected. "How dare the creators do this", "I'll never forgive them for this", "this is an abomination", etc.

I don't know, this rhetoric and behavior has always weirded me out and I've always wondered what the root of it is.

Had a theory that it has to do with religion dying out so people focus their weirdo energy elsewhere but I don't know.

I'll never forgive what they did to Melia in Xenoblade Chronicles, does that count? I need to slap several bitches.
