Like in 28 Days Later the Infected are otherwise normal humans who are afflicted with a virus. They might have adrenaline pumpin through em cause of the rage shit, but they still need to eat and drink and they'll starve.

And in The Walking Dead you have zombies after an extended period of time crumbling down to dust and whatnot

The infection in TLoU is mostly just a fungus, right? Like the people infected with it are still alive the whole time. So like will they just... crumble away eventually?

They do eventually die and spread their spores

That said there doesn't seem to be a specific time period this happens otherwise there would be less infected the 20+ years after the outbreak in the game.

It all depends on if the fungus is capable of keeping a body alive just by its own power. Maybe they die over time. But even then, the fungus spreads. In the very beginning of the game don't we see a body sitting still in a building and it's totally covered in fungus but is dead? And there was spores in the air. Maybe the spores come out when the body finally dies

Yeah I was inspired to make this topic after watching clips from the ground zero outbreak hospital in part 2 and I'm like "wait so are these people still alive after 20-25 years?"

I think it depends.

we see some being sustained in fungi cocoons in both games, and in the second game, we see a bunch of them fuse together.

but if left alone to the elements, I think they would eventually die without food/drink.
