his older brother is an abusive bully his mother is so neglectful she doesnt even notice right away she left him behind on their trip to paris
and his uncle just picks on him for no reason. not letting him watch a movie with the family that wasnt even R rated even though he let the other kids watch
and then verbally abusing the poor kid at dinner while his parents say nothing. no decent parent would sit idly by while someone yells insults at their kid

i believe this has never been disputed by anyone so yeah, you're right. lol

That one uncle is a major asshole

They do it again in the sequel, they learn absolutely nothing.

His mom makes him sleep in the attic too. It doesn't look very insulated and it was snowing. No way if any heat from the furnace warmed it up if they even had any going up there. Kevin was probably freezing.

It's crazy how they entirely blamed Kevin for ruining that school recital in 2 when Buzz is such an obvious troublemaker.

My girlfriend watched it for the first time last week, and she said "wow, his entire family fucking sucks"

I actually don't think the mom is as bad by the end of it. It doesn't entirely excuse her, but she does feel remorse and accepts that she was shitty to him early on. But others like Uncle Frank are completely repugnant.

I dunno.... the kranks one up him. Instead of telling their daughter they were going on vacation, which could have ended the movie at the start, they forced me to watch a shitty movie which I asked for a refund afterwards. The only movie I've ever asked for a refund afterwards, and I watched one of the newer predator movies and slept the entire movie.

Maybe he should stop being such a wuss and a loser

A lot of people seem to think the movie was parodying white upper class family culture but I guess the director has made comments that they weren't thinking about it that hard

For some reason, it didn't initially register that way. I was watching it a few years ago and was taken aback by how much I hate his family.

Also, "I am upstairs dummy." is an all-time great line.

Yea its weird how everyone treats him. I wonder if his family dynamic inspired JK Rowling when she wrote of Harry's home life

Yeah Buzz is abusive and gets away with way too much, and Uncle Frank is a real a-hole. I was surprised when I watched it with my kids after having not seen it in years.

Apparently in an early draft, Uncle Frank turns out to be a villain who hired Harry and Marv to burglarize the McCallister home. Perhaps his character retained some of those traits from when he was a villain.

It's so exaggerated that I almost wonder if it's meant to be a child's perspective on how things are going. His family isn't actually that bad, it's just Kevin's interpretation of what's actually happening.

the most memorable part in the movie is the torture the bandits go through
but thats only like 17 minutes of the film

I think this is true at least as far as Old Man Marley and the Pigeon Lady are concerned. I think the terrifying visages (in terms of the actor's portrayal) are meant to represent how Kevin perceives them, I don't think they were actually looking at him in such a threatening manner. Then once he realizes they are nice people, we (and him) see them for who they really are.

That annoys me. Literally everybody in that room notices what Buzz is doing and he gets no repercussions at the end of it.

That's because he "apologized" for it, however I'm siding with Kevin because his whole family is pretty dang stupid not to be able to pick up on Buzz's disingenuous speech oozing with mockery.
