So many of the comments here mention how their parents liked to pry into any of the journals/diaries they had, and then yell at or even beat them for what was written inside. It got to the point where some of them still have problems trusting people or expressing themselves.

Sounds exactly like my experience growing up. I had a journal for about a week before my mother found it, read it, and then had my dad beat the absolute shit out of me. I think i had mostly written about how I hated going to church, which for my parents is like the worst shit I could ever say.

That kind of upbringing really messes you up for the rest of your life.

My dad asked me why I was texting some dude a lot during my freshman year of college when I visited home for Christmas and it was because he was on a team project

So ever since then I'm pretty paranoid about my tech to the point where I'll purchase my own equipment instead of renting from internet providers. I also don't use home wifi when I visit.

Can relate. My mom is equal parts controlling, fragile, and critical. She wanted to know everything but couldn't handle or support anything, so I had to be very selective about what I shared and with whom because I was terrified of it getting back to her. Any time I had to write anything personal for school, it was full of lies because I preferred having her get mad at or criticize me for lying than be treated the same for genuine thoughts and emotions.
