IIRC, I heard there's free therapy via religious programs

Are they any good?

A lot of people can't afford it, don't think they need to, or never even thought about therapy.

A lot of people out there cant afford it plus having to take time off your schedule to attend sessions with the potential of missing work.

Its easy to see why lots of people dont bother and just try to push through life with their baggage

If you have faith maybe, "pray" is a viable solution for some people. Otherwise, no.

Money is the major issue. I never heard of free church therapy. I probably should try going to more churchs. I know they're supposed to be good places to find community.

Tbh, I don't think the church therapy would be any good depending on the church... And free therapy sounds like it wouldn't be the best in most cases... And the good therapy cost time and money...

There are legitimately churches that do help people, I see it in the small town I live in. Small baptist church up the road will put people in hotel rooms, help with addiction and getting people into rehab. Lady I used to work with, they sent her daughter to rehab for 3 months and paid for it. They told her to pay it back to the community and didn't want reimbursement.

I turn my nose up at a lot of religion, but if you look there are some that can help in a lot of situations, even if you never stepped foot in their church. I'd imagine this is more like places here, small rural mountain towns and whatnot.

I respect the hell out of that, lot of other churches should take notes.

For a ton of examples, including the ones above, the reason is because people reject hard work, and instead opt for shortcuts to immediate stress relief.

Alcohol is an easy one.
Anger is also a release of bottled up frustration.
Depression is more broad and situational, but one potential reason is because some people are just threatened by the notion of "getting help".

If legitimate, yes

I just hope that in the back of their mind that they aren't expecting you to pay it back by joining the church and serving them

Depending on what your issue is, simply taking the time to do research and set up an appointment (involving talking to an actual person) can be a hurdle. One of those things that you keep putting off.

I personally looked into BetterHelp.
It's like $400+/month, paid all at once in a lump sum, with no other payment options available.
It's also weekly appointments with no other options.

Even cheap therapy is way too fucking expensive.

This reminds me of when I was younger, you could get a huge discount on the private school I went to by joining the church They eventually stopped that, though

Isnt that the online one thats suppose to be cheap? Thats a lot for an online therapist, I would think Not to mention, having no extra payment options Seems like its not as good as the ads make it out to be

Thats what I thought.
Was really disappointed at the lack of options for payment and scheduling.
Sure you can text a therapist whenever you want during your "subscription", but the rigid once a week video appointments and lack of payment options felt really disheartening.
Keep in mind that's canadian pricing, but still.

When I tried therapy, he made things much worse. Not in the sense that things were being brought up so I could work through them, but more he was just being mean.

As an example, when I get embarrassed/stressed I tend to reach up and place my hand where my shoulder and neck meet. Idk why, I didn't even realize I was doing it until I met this guy. He was asking me about my life and I was getting really embarrassed about it. I was answering honestly when he interrupted me. "Why are you doing that?" I was confused, so I know I gave him a baffled look. Then he pointed out that I had my hand on my shoulder/neck, and insisted that I give him an answer as to why I was doing that. I hadn't even been aware of it, I was focusing on how best to answer his questions. So I apologized and and sat there with my arms folded for the rest of our session, which he wasn't pleased about either.

The church I used to go to was like that. They started a halfway house for people released from prison, and helped get them jobs and rehab. They'd hold a community food drives, where they'd box up food for families and also host a huge cookout for anyone to come get a free meal and goods. Started a thrift shop similar to goodwill, but all profits go into a fund that is used to pay people's bills when they fall behind. That sort of thing.

But... The pastor's baby granddaughter died. So he took time to be with family. During his absence the other leaders of the church turned against him. Spread rumors about him, until he returned to a bunch of accusations and lied. So he quit, relocated to Texas where he started a new church that is helping his new community. While ours brought in a super rich, money hungry pastor. One who openly abused loopholes in the law, lies to the government for handouts, and only has eyes for other rich people. It changed from a genuinely caring, community driven church that loved people, to a money hungry beast that says what you want to hear if youve got money.

I quit and never looked back. I hate that church now. It's just full of users, and if you don't have millions of dollars, good luck even getting a "good morning" out of them.
