Current Events > Gilmore Girls, at least the first few seasons, is some good television.

I won't lie, I do think ASP has some issues, but she's a really good writer. I do think the show lost some of its luster during the Yale years, especially when I believe she tanked the show in season 6 out of pettiness for not getting to return. Despite that, the first few seasons, or the Chilton era as I like to call it, are very captivating.

Although, and I'm not about to give an original thought since the internet has already established this long before me, the entirety of the show (including AYitL) is a very great character study of the "gifted small-town child" with Rory as a focus. Some may hate she never really became something, but honestly, so many of us can probably relate to her (besides the Yale and rich grandparents thing, but I mean, it's still a TV show so what can I say), even if we don't want to. I have to imagine that many of us were the "Rorys" of our family.

I've watched the whole thing but I'm not sure why. There's something hypnotizing about it that I just can't look away from. I don't think it's particularly good, but the fast talking and weird as fuck town vibes just makes me stare ever deeper into the abyss.

A lot of it feels really vapid. Lorelai's a fucking awful mother and her reasons for hating her own parents seem superficial most of the time.

I think when Rory for no fucking reason decides to quit yale and live in her grandparents' poolhouse is when I stopped being hypnotized by the show, it just became too stupid. But by that time I was too in deep to not see it through to the end.

My wife LOVES that show. I always found that it tried too hard to be "too smart for it's own good" and fell into the trap that a lot of shows fall into. There were just too many moments per episode where I couldn't help but say "people don't talk to each other like that in real life".

Dialogue like that just takes me out of it. Especially when it's a show with elements of seriousness in it.

Also, everyone on the show thinks they're a lot more important that they really are, considering the town is, like, 40 people, tops.

I think the vapid nature of it actually helps it out tbh. It's also a pretty interesting look at the early 2000s since there are some outdated, yet realistic for the time, jokes in there.

And yeah, hypnotizing is a great word to describe it as a show. My mom loves the show, and I feel like every year, she decides to rewatch it out of nowhere, but if I accidentally start watching a little bit while out in the living room, suddenly my whole day is spent watching it.

The character dynamics are fun. The actual plot gets a bit dumb, but the way the characters interact keeps it stable.

Yeah, that's the strongest element of the show. I think ASP is good at creating solid characters and interactions. I can't verify that as I've never seen any of her other shows, but there were a lot of strangely good side characters in Gilmore Girls for how unimportant many of them were.

I thought a lot of the side characters were really annoying and I got annoyed we had to put up with them because the show characters, acting like complete aliens, never told them to fuck the hell off.

Mainly Kirk and Taylor.

I'm not a big fan of him tbh either. Tbh, I never liked when Rory became too overexposed to the "high-class," which is probably why I prefer her relationship with characters like Dean and Jess.

If that was real life I bet your brain would eventually just start filtering out all the fast talking and kind of mute it so you could enjoy their bosoms without a headache.

Idk, I like to talk just as much as they like to talk... I just don't have the wit, lmao.
