I've tried to sell people on For The King in the past and it's never really worked, but I feel the need to try again after hearing this news.

For The King is one of the most engaging turn-based RPGs I've ever played. Me and a former friend of mine used to pull like six hour gaming sessions playing it without even realising it, we'd play and play until one of us checked the time or until we both got fatigued. It was an insane experience, only matched by couch co-op Diablo 3 earlier.

You create up to three characters with their own class. The Blacksmith is good with heavy weapons and brute strength, the Bard is good with technical skills, the Herbalist can diffuse healing items to the entire party - and there's a joke class called the Hobo that sucks at every stat and starts each campaign with a pointy stick that can break if you miss every attack roll.

Visually and mechanically, it's reminiscent of tabletop gaming. If your attack stat is 80, you have 80% of a chance to roll successfully. More difficult weapons require more rolls per attack than an easier weapon, but do incredible damage if they hit. You can also buff your rolls with a Focus resource that you replenish at campsites and inns.

The campaigns are very barebones, which is a massive strength because it lets you and your party have your own adventure. The fun of the game is going around - preferably with a friend in couch co-op - and doing stuff like games of chance, side dungeons and random events to get better loot. If you wipe, your heroes are permanently dead and you have to start again - but you also unlock Lore points which let you buy more character classes, events, weapons, armour and customisation options. It's the ultimate fuck-around game, and when you win a campaign it feels so good.

I'm not doing a great job of explaining it, but it is stupid amounts of fun and it's one of my most fondly remembered video games of the past five years. Imagine playing Final Fantasy with a friend, and you take turns attacking with your different characters - that's For The King. The friend I played this with ended up being a back-stabbing fuckface, but this game is just as great as the day I stumbled upon it on Game Pass.

I'm watching a devlog for the new one and they've added a fourth character. You can play this with anywhere between 1-4 players.

They've also added a front row and a back row, so archers and mages can attack more efficiently in the back row while the front row tanks hits
