I've done like 50 runs and fought Hades 5 times. I only got to his second health bar once, just barely, and died immediately.

I've maxed out most of the things on the mirror. I've upgraded some of the weapons with titan blood. I'm missing like 8 keepsakes I think.

The times I got to Hades were with the rail gun twice and the shield three times and I'm really bad with the other weapons.

I had death defiance x3, the thing that gives you health when you pick up the purple drop, distance damage keepsake, and I waited until the weapons had the purple crap around them. Crush shot or the phalanx thing seem to be my best casts. I had some mix of chill, hangover, and weak for attack and special each time I got to him and either poseidan's knockback thing or Zeus' thunder thing for dash.

If there's something I'm missing, don't tell me. I'm going to keep playing and hopefully figure it out. I'm just wondering if this is my lack of ability to actually play the game. I always seem to suffer a really stupid death when I get an optimal build. Not going to say the game is cheating... yet.

I think there's probably a little bit of skill you might be missing, but I'm my experience, the way to beat Hades is to get the right boons, or the boons that work best for you. When I beat Hades the first time with the boons I wanted, I basically got the same boons every time (with the help of keepsakes) and then never lost to him again.

Basically this.

There are a few generic tips that might help:

1. You're invulnerable while dashing, but not while doing a dash attack. Most times it best to sacrifice some damage in order to avoid taking damage.
2. Spear keepsake is probably your best choice for the last portion.
3. Purple stuff on the weapon just means you get 20% more darkness/gems from pickups. If you find a weapon you're comfortable with, you could just stick with that until you beat him.
4. If you're having trouble even reaching him, try for a more defensive build. I know Athena's dash was my go to 90% of the time when I first started playing. There's also the mirror option that reduces damage from enemies with a bloodstone stuck in them.

This generally isn't a very good keepsake in my experience. I would suggest using the collar, tooth, or acorn to increase your survivability.

Sometimes with rogue likes you just gotta keep hitting your face into them until your face becomes hard and then youre just a little bit good at them

the nice thing about hades though is that there are so many effective combos so you can keep playing around to find which work best for you

personally I love the Poseidon boons and dashing around knocking everything into walls to death, its very effective

I see. I know you can sort of gear a run towards certain boons but I've only been able to put together a really good ones by dumb luck. Any time I actually try for something, it's a really disjointed, nonfunctional mess.

Yes. That doesn't stack, right? I might have been wasting time/opportunities trying to get as many of them as possible and jam all of 'em in there if it doesn't. <_<

I had it the first time I got to Hades, so I just kinda rolled with it but yeah I'm seeing now it doesn't seem that great. I was using the collar for most of it. Might switch back to that.

Yeah. The weird thing is that I'm not really getting bored or discouraged with it, so it's still fun... for now. Poseidon seems to be my best bet so far, too.

I did get to him again with Stygius and did well but I was already out of Death Defiance by the time I got to Styx, so there was no way I was going to win. That was another one of those dumb luck builds because I ended up with some sweet boons.

I think my problem is that I'm too quick to write off a run if it's not just the way I want it, so I'm just being reckless until it's too late and by the time I get good boons and the build is coming together, I'm already too far behind for it to matter. Kind of makes me think of my approach to real life. D'oh.

Athena dash makes it waaaaay harder to die

So put on her keepsake to get that early and then just put a lot of Zeus boons on your weapon

Works for every weapon

The shield is easy mode bc you can attack while defending. It's not as fun to play with as the other weapons, but I think that was the first weapon I used to beat Hades. Just spam the defensive ram attack or whatever and you can basically never take damage.

Yeah you need to change that thought. Go into each run thinking it's just you and your weapon. Any boon you get is just a bonus. Focus on hitting and dodging. Focus on avoid attacks more so than attacking.

Also that green area attack that Hades releases when getting to his second health bar can be dashed over along with the skull bombs. That tip is what helped me beat him.

All attacks are dodgeable. That fact was a great comfort to me, since then it's more "how do I learn this attack pattern" rather than "what the hell"

I found that focusing on one attack and spamming it works best.

Are you trying to learn his patterns at all? Other than getting a good set of boons that's the most important thing

The biggest tip for me is that when you get to Elysium, switch to either the acorn or broken spearpoint keepsakes. The former is from Eurydice and means you ignore the first three attacks from bosses. The latter is from Patroclus and gives you a few seconds of invulnerability whenever you get hit.

The spearpoint is the one I prefer because it works in non-boss rooms and works for the entire fight.

Are you hiding behind the pillars when he shoots his beams? The pillars will block them.

I havent played Hades in a while but I remember that tip helping me a lot.

As others have stated learning attack patterns and grabbing Athena boons helps tremendously. If you aren't currently using it, picking up and maxing out the mirror trait that let's you do an extra 40% damage on enemies that have two or more status effects on them is a big help too.

Yeah I haven't been switching keepsakes enough. I'll keep this in mind.

Thanks everyone. This is all really good stuff. I'm going to try a few runs after I finish a movie and see if I can pull it off.

Figure out a build that works for you and then go from there. Then you can make at least a good attempt out of most any run.

I started with figuring out good dash builds and went from there. Then I slowly learned how to use weapons to synergize with those dashes. This baby stepped me into not being awful with the weapons. Once you're actually good with weapons, things get much easier

Oh, one more tip. If you're really struggling in the Temple of Styx, try picking up some Poseidon boons. The rooms there are so small that any kind of spammable knockback will typically obliterate enemies with wall smash damage. People rightly recommended Athena's dash ITT, but it's extremely satisfying to get Poseidon's and finish the Temple in about three minutes because you spam-dashed every single room.

Mostly the same, I just know some people struggle in Styx.

Personally, I found it a breath of fresh air after Elysium's eye-bitches and their fucking shields.

Got half way through the second bar after starting the battle with only one death defiance, so I feel like I'm getting better at it. I had Athena's dash and Poseidon boons on my weapon with rupture. I had the Zeus cast. Also had something that I think either hurt bosses more or protected me more from them, can't remember. Does the record room tell you all your boons for a run? Think I need to actually start paying attention more and maybe writing them down if not.

I'm probably done for the night but I think I should be able to take him tomorrow.

Congrats. I believe you need to beat him 10 times to get the end credits. Then there's an epilogue that you probably won't want to worry about.

I got to him again and was whipping his ass with a death defiance to spare but I don't know what the fuck happened because he hit me with that orange beam even though I was on the other side of a pillar. It seriously had to be like one pixel (are games still pixels?) out of place because that was some bullshit. I probably could've still beaten him but I was too angry and played irrationally. Will probably be too busy for gaming the rest of this week but I do want to play it some more.

Congrats! Another small tip if you're going to try for the ending, try dashing towards/through him to avoid his spin attack. He tends to clip you if you try running away.

Also, Poseidon's, Aphrodite's, or Artemis's greater summons are pretty good for taking a large chunk of his health when you get near the end of the health bar.

I'd suggest trying for the ending, the story is worth it IMO. Epilogue might be a bit much though, you pretty much have to max affinity with most of the Olympians.

I just beat Heat 32 with the spear earlier today after like 5 attempts. Level 3 collar gives double damage to attacks not boosted by a boon. Only really had the laser cast and exploding spear by the end.

dang hades is a hell of a game

I only beat him once, with bow, and I was relying a LOT on ranged attack so I could hide behind the pillars easier and I almost died at the very end as well.

That's the shackle. The collar just boosts your health.
