IT needs to be a 24/7 operation, and it constantly breaks down. I feel like if youre in IT operations, youll just always be on call.

Well yea, but it always seems like shit hits the fan when that one go-getter that knows everything is not in the office.

This is why businesses need to stop short staffing and actually hire enough people to where the two people on payroll actually get time to rest. With short staffing, youre treated like company property and made to feel guilty for daring to take personal time. Then, once theyve made the entire place of business a sweat shop, they start whining that nobody wants to work.

Because companies don't work 24/7? We have normal hours like anyone else. If we close our doors at 6, we might stay until 7 or 8, but after that we clock out just like anyone else.

If its a networking position where people have to come in after hours, they just adjust their schedule. So they still work the same amount of hours, just move those hours around.

If you can telework its actually pretty sweet. Granted there's a lot to do still, and the job is understaffed.....but I also have decent bosses.

Long as I meet deadlines, my bosses leave me alone.

Also, I'm hourly, not salary. So when I work say 40 to 60 hours, I get paid OT. I'm also not on call.

Honestly beyond being underpaid and ubderstaffed, I can't complain about my job all that much. The telework has saved my sanity (3 hours a day on the road to same job prior to covid), and my wallet thousands.

(In IT and Telework)

I'm in IT but I'm on the deskside user support side, not the server/network side. So I can easily still take time off.

And yes, our System Admins rotate weeks on which one is on-call for the week.

I'm going to table your 24/7 discussion slightly.

All IT jobs are not on call jobs.
Job rotation is a thing.
IT is a huge field with many professions operating wildly different IT jobs. Think for example a brain surgeon vs your dentist.

Yeah, you tend to get that a lot from people on the outside. Where it's like, I'm a server admin and people will just assume I know deep intricacies about databases or software dev or some shit. Lol

So at my job, our IT department is of about 600 employees, and I have no idea what they do and why we need so much IT personnel. Of those 600 employees, Ive only ever talked to like 20 experts who know everything about a specific discipline I needed their help in, in setting up a web-based COTS program (cybersecurity, SQL database, Apache web server, etc.).

When one of them was out, and the one system happen to go down during the pilot, I couldnt find a replacement (even with the IT management help) that knew how to fix it and the entire project was on a standstill until he came back.

At my old job, I was the only network engineer. I had to work during every vacation I ever took at that place. Even when I was visiting my dad before he died in the hospital, I was working while I was at the hospital. Is was on call 24/7, which was rough.

At my current job, we have about 48 network engineers and overnight support, so it's much better. I'm only on call one every 7 to 8 weeks now.
