Yeah it's not sociopathic to wonder. It's appropriate to caveat scheduling speculation with "obviously we only care about the player right now," as most have been doing.

It's a massive logistical situation with really no precedent other than the covid season. Unlike the covid year, though, just shifting everything back a week isn't feasible as there will be actual concerts and other events that already have the venues booked, vs. peak covid when massive events like that weren't happening. Not to mention moving those games a day or two didn't really matter for a week 12 regular season team between two dumpster fires. This was a matchup between the prospective 2 seed and 3 seeds (the higher seed would get home field should the teams meat in the playoffs).

We're already into Tuesday of week 18. Bills and Bengals both play important games this upcoming Sunday. Both of which have massive seeding implications (Bills moreso).

That leaves, what, an attempt to play tomorrow at the earliest to give a realistic break time for Sunday's week 18 game?

They could talk about pushing the week 18 games to Monday as well, or even Tuesday, but that's still two games in six days if they were to play tomorrow (which I can't imagine is going to happen). And THEN at least one of those two teams will be playing a playoff game the following week.

Alternatively, they could call the game a tie, in which case, the Chiefs take the 1 seed.

There's really no good path.

It's just unprecedented territory, really. So it's not insensitive to be curious.

Respectfully, this ain't it. This type of contact occurs hundreds of times a week. The type of "change" that would prevent this hit would literally end the sport.

The more I was thinking about it before seeing this tweet, adding a week seems most fair to everyone. The host cities for a lot of playoff games aren't set yet, or were recently set so hopefully there is some flexibility there. The Super Bowl absolutely cannot be moved, but it's 2 weeks after conference championship games so there is some room to maneuver.

IMO, there should be an off week between the regular season and the first round of the playoffs anyways, both to accommodate unforeseen situations like this and just for players to get some rest before the playoffs. Adding it in as a permanent thing going forward would be good.

Nothing should change safety wise. It's a freak accident.

This isn't concussions, which continue to be a problem in football and all sports. This isn't deadly crashes in auto racing.

And while sports absolutely do not matter in comparison to someone's life, there has to be a discussion about how to reschedule this game at some point. What are they gonna do? Cancel the season? Deaths and national tragedies don't even end seasons.

So either they push the playoffs back a week (losing the off week between the conference championships and the Super Bowl in the process) to give them a spot to play this game, or the game just doesn't get played. Those are the only outcomes I see happening at this point.

There have been hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of hits over the course of NFL history, and this is seemingly the first time that a hit has caused someone to enter cardiac arrest on the field.

That's not remotely proof of a widespread change being needed. It was a horrific fluke that seems to be a one in a million type of scenario likely rounding down.

I don't think any institutional change in the NFL is likely to happen soon, they just have no real incentive. The change will happen from parents seeing all this CTE stuff in the news.
I think you'll start seeing the effects in middle/upper class neighborhoods first, parents just not wanting their kids playing football. I think it's pretty likely that in 20/30 years football will have a reputation as a lower class sport, because the only parents willing to risk it will be those who see it as a chance to pay for college.

sad to say. it already has that reputation of being a sport for the inner city lower class kids. Most people that arent poor would risk their lives to play football.

Boxing has the same stigma too

If Bills forfeit the game Sunday Patriots automatically make the playoffs and Dolphins/Steelers are out of luck. Their games would become meaningless.

There's nothing wrong with "thoughts and prayers" if there's nothing else that can be done. People have a problem with it when people who could do something to fix a problem fall back on it.

As long as it's not coming from the doctors saying that instead of treating him it's fine.
