Id imagine one of the key factors that made it possible with dogs is that they are a social creature by nature. Bears tend to be more solitary.

If bears became domesticated and people somehow had enough space for them, I wouldn't be surprised if they were used heavily for manual labor.

Devolution?

Which species is more successful on planet earth? The domesticated dog.

We did it through selective breeding; probably taking the smartest wolves and only breeding them for a few decades would do it.

Probably started with some abandoned wolf cubs that imprinted on humans. Humans gave the wolf meat, and if it was smart enough it would understand.

I don't see people having issues with pitbulls but being okay with a house bear living with children.

It would suck for the bears. The last thing any species needs is to open itself up to even more human influence.

Look at ugly mass inbreds like pugs vs wolves. The same kind of weird shit would happen with bears and theyd develop all sorts of birth defects and basically exist just to suffer.

also we already train tigers, lions, bears, elephants, killer whales, etc. Pretty much any mammal is smart enough to be trained, as far as I can tell.

we domesticated cattle too: the aurochs we bred cows from were onery and dangerous. we could domesticate any species if we had a reason to. there is no reason to domesticate bears.

what reason could we have to domesticate wolves? scent and hearing is better than ours, so dogs would have always been useful.

we never domesticated the house cat, not really. those guys just evolved in africa and stuck with us ever since.

but we had oxen, which are better than bears for heavy labor.

Could you imagine if bears were as nice as dogs and could also do all the heavy lifting though?

Although back to the OP I'm pretty sure one of the reasons we domesticated dogs is because 40k years ago or whatever we couldn't eat all the meat we hunted. So adding a bear to the mix would probably make it so less dogs, people, and bears survived. You'd need a lot to feed a bear.

An old documentary from the mid 2000s i saw on TV once, said that dogs happened when a human child was lost in the wilderness, and taken in by wolves

Later, he was found by a community of humans and was taken in. They showed the mother figure che k on him at night, only to find him at the edge of the village, talking to wolves. Then the next scene jumped to a generation later and we saw hunters with wolves at their side . Implying the adopted child taught the village how to train a wolf

cats tho
Sometimes a cat would creep into the village. It would find meat, or someone woukd toss it meat. People ignored it because it was small and harmless. And they figured out the cat was eating mice who stole grain

If a bear creeps into a village, all the villagers get spears and kill it

We are getting to the point in our technology that rather than using selective breeding for hundreds of thousands of years we can instead use CRISPR to knock a few genes out.

In so doing we may, yes, one day create miniature bears, gorillas, hippos, and elephants that you can carry in your pocket and do your darnedest to try and domesticate.
