We did it through selective breeding; probably taking the smartest wolves and only breeding them for a few decades would do it. Probably started with some abandoned wolf cubs that imprinted on humans. Could you imagine if bears were as nice as dogs and could also do all the heavy lifting though? Although back to the OP I'm pretty sure one of the reasons we domesticated dogs is because 40k years ago or whatever we couldn't eat all the meat we hunted. So adding a bear to the mix would probably make it so less dogs, people, and bears survived.
