I believe there is no speaker. The last Congress officially ended, which marked the end of the Speakers' term as well.

It's one of those weird in-between things, where for a few moments, America technically doesn't have a speaker, but we never think of it because it's not something to think about. It's the same thing with the president, as there's a moment between the last president officially leaving office, and the president-elect being sworn in, so there's a period of time (minutes to maybe a few hours) where America has no president every 4 years.

Got it thanks! My test is next Friday so thats good to know if nothing changes before then.

Swearings in, and even leadership elections themselves, are usually nothingburger stories that get little attention unless the new congress immediately proposes something bonkers.

Yeah. This is the first time I've ever actually paid attention to the speaker election in my lifetime. There were reports beforehand that 5 to 9 Republicans would vote against Kevin McCarthy, which would bring the House to a halt... I didn't foresee 20 to 21 of them voting against him.

It's pretty clear that nothing is going to get done today since it will probably take another round of negotiations to get yes votes for McCarthy (or another day for the main block of GOP to determine who the replacement candidate will be if McCarthy decides to step aside and let someone else be nominated).

Just wonder how many votes McCarthy feels like losing today.

For those that haven't been paying attention, why isn't everyone voting across party lines?

Is it that McCarthy is a bad candidate? Is it that the Republican Part is spilt between "Rhinos" and "Trumpers"?

Pretty much on the 2nd point, there's a splinter in the Republican party, of what I've been calling the Republicans and Trumplicans (even if the Trumplicans have moved past Trump at this point). The Trumplicans want many concessions in order to be able to get committee assignments they need to push their desired agendas.

Last time the speaker wasn't decided on the first ballot was exactly 100 years ago, it turns out

A big part of this is that the Trumplicans have a lot more power than they normally would have in a house majority due to the thin majority the republicans have. In an ironic sense, Trumplicans major losses in the house, making it where there's a thin majority in the first place, have given the survivors a lot more negotiating power for what they want from the mainstream republicans.

What better way to show that power than to completely hold a Speaker election hostage? McCarthy now either has to completely become a puppet Speaker, or step aside for someone the Trumplicans will feel represented by (which will further restrict the Republicans from moving away from the Trumplicans in the long-run).

In the end, people asking if this is about McCarthy, it's not really about McCarthy. This sends a message to the entire Republican group of representatives that there's a sizable chunk that can block things if necessary to achieve their goals.

They probably want someone that will promise them committee chairs to "investigate" all the dumb shit they keep complaining about, and other unprecedented power as well as money.

So yeah, they probably want someone like Jim Jordan or Josh Hawley instead.

I'm pretty sure she literally was trailer trash growing up. She met her husband at a bowling alley. He flashed his genitals to group of underage girls. She was one of the girls and when he took his pants down, she apparently thought he was a good person to marry
