tl;dr, the FTC proposed a new rule that would ban noncompetes. It won't happen right away and they claim "it could face legal challenges."

I think that's great and hope this goes into effect.

whats the benefit to the average citizen of a non-compete agreement?

unless the non-compete agreement comes with compensation that basically equates to the employee having a full income for the full non-compete period

If someone signs a contract with a company, they can have it in their contract to not work with any competing company for any amount of time. If it's in the contract, there's not much you can do about it. It can also say you can't work for similar companies in a certain radius of the original company, as well. So if these were in a contract I signed with a book store, there's a possibility I can't work for any other book store in a 200 mile radius for 10 years after I leave my current job.

they're complete crap and only help benefit the companies.

In a video call with reporters on Wednesday, Ms. Khan said she believed the F.T.C. had clear authority to issue the rule, noting that federal law empowers the agency to prohibit unfair methods of competition.

I'm not saying it's valid, but I think the idea is supposed to be that your company would lose profits if other companies in the sector were poaching their employees. So *your* non-compete clause doesn't help you, but your coworkers non-complete clauses help you.

This is all based on the idea that companies doing well means employees do well which is frequently not the case.

I've heard the term before but never stopped to think what it actually meant. This is some dystopian level shit. It's only a minor step above the whole kafala thing they like to do in the Middle East.

Ive never abided by my non competes. In the companies Ive worked for only one has ever cared. So they talked to the old company and got the exception.

But I wouldnt care if they were removed entirely. Theyre stupid.

Also ban the ability to waive rights to join a class.

I'm not holding my breath mainly because I can see this go to the courts and seeing what they did with Roe v Wade and hopefully what they won't do with the student loan forgiveness, I can either see this one taking a long time to go through or stopped. Hope I'm wrong and this one goes through effortlessly.

When I worked at a gas station when I was younger, the owner made me sign a contract that stated that if I quit, I couldn't go work at another gas bar within 3 km. Noncomplete clause. Bitch, fuck you.
