The concept is very much and overdone flavour of the month at this point, and a lot of open world games are extremely formulaic and unremarkable (including pretty much every high-profile game Ubisoft has put out in the last several years), but that doesn't mean a studio can't produce a high-quality one that does enough interesting things with the concept to really stand out. By most accounts, Elden Ring does exactly that, eschewing the more common tropes that many feel hold typical open-world fare back. It's mostly just that Elden Ring came out in the same year as Xenoblade 3 (which actually also has considerable open-world elements that are done extremely well) that invalidates any claims that it's GotY. --- This is my signature.
