Athletes are definitely not overpaid because majority of people cannot do what they are able to do no matter how hard they tried. Many people I knew played sports their entire lives and never even got close to being good enough to go pro.

Its a very difficult life with the workload, the practices, and time it takes to be good at a sport. Its not all glamour.

whatever the hell i'm doing

IMO CEOs of huge companies
depends on the company tbqh.

they're not directly involved in the grunt work of production or internal operations, but they tend to oversee procurement and allocation of company resources, investor and partner relations, high-level organizational strategy, and generally coordinating the company's navigation of the broader system.

furthermore, since they're both the face of and directly accountable for the overall success of the organization, their name and subsequent career are on the line based on the company's performance, and so there's a degree of selectiveness with respect to more prominent candidates, meaning their comp must be that much more competitive.

in short, they're paid well not because they produce, but because they're critical to the well-being of the entire corporate machine.

These are terrible.

IT? Some are overpaid, but there are also lots of people working insane hours for middling pay. It really depends on what kind of IT and what company.

Nurses? NURSES? Nurses are among the hardest working jobs out there, and they literally save lives, and yet their pay is lower than most professional salaried jobs. If anything they're underpaid.

Manufacturing is a sector where people are usually busy, I doubt there are many people paid good money to just stare at a screen and scratch their balls all day.

On my board, there's a mixed bag of usefulness. Most of them are useful and worth their cost, with the exception of the executive sales director, who is a colossal black hole of money that never makes a return.

Even then, I'd still make the argument that CEOs aren't generally being paid based on their value. They're being paid based on their stake.

Unless you wanna make the argument that Jeff Bezos is just that good of a worker and that valuable to the company that his 30 minutes is worth 20 million hours of a regular person.

I dunno. In a just society renumeration would be based on some kind of inherent value to society, but we live in capitalism. People are generally renumerated based on financial value and supply and demand. The same mechanism that makes CEO uber wealthy is the same that makes tiktok stars wealthy.

Like, Lionel Messi just kicks a ball around on a pitch. It's an imaginary hardship for entertainment. And yet he can do it literally better than anyone else in the world, in a highly competitive environment where people pay unreal amounts of money to see the best. So that's why he's paid so much.

Indeed, as high as athlete salaries are, sports franchises don't pay that much unless they expect to make way, way more than that. If you're bringing in hundreds of millions and you want tens of millions, are you really getting overpaid?

You know who really likes the narrative that athletes are overpaid? The owners. They would love nothing more than to cap athletes' salaries at a few hundred thousand and pocket the rest.

I think CEOs are the best answer. Especially ones who didn't found their companies. They can run their companies into the ground and make tens of millions of dollars at least. Even the hardest working of them... they typically make hundreds of times the salary of the average worker in their company... are they working hundreds of times harder? Yeah, no, I don't think so.

ceos are compensated looselly proportionally to the size of the corporations they're stewarding, particularly since a significant amount of their compensation is in the form of equity concessions to establish a vested interest in a public company's well-being. the average pay is so astronomical because never mind the aforementioned competitive dynamics in hiring competent ceos for large corporations, the statistical outlier corporations have market capitalizations in the [hundreds of] billions, even trillions of dollars. this translates to an average compensation in the tens of millions per year, even though the median is only like 90-100k.
