I've heard this as well and I wonder how true this is.

He is favored at the moment. Don't take this as a gotcha moment against me if he does win, but I can't help but feel he's being way too overrated at this stage. He hasn't had to do a national-stage debate, hasn't actually had to go one-on-one with Trump, and we have seen many favored Republican candidates completely fall apart as the actually primary season begins.

We'll see, though.

There's considerable potential for him to be the oft-dreaded 'Trump, but competent.' He's exceedingly dangerous in his policy, has even less respect for decency and human life than Trump, if you can believe it (motherfucker sued the Special Olympics over COVID protocols), and there is no bottom to how low he will sink to elevate his clout. Conversely, has less charisma than a burning sack of dog turds, but the conservative base have proven routinely that this isn't an issue.

At this point, it all boils down to whether or not Republicans can successfully sell him to moderates as the 'sane, reasonable' alternative to Trump (two things he most certainly is not in reality).

This.

In my wild speculation though, I just don't see DeSantis appealing to the crowd who has huffed anti-establishment populist rhetoric for the past 8 years.

That really will come down to how many genuinely hold those views vs how many just repeat whatever view their preferred party is pushing.

He handily won reelection to governor in Florida - a formerly-purple state that elected him by a razor-thin margin the first time - despite spending the past two years actively killing / endangering the health of his constituents with his deliberate anti-health policies regarding COVID; even Trump's bungling of COVID could at worst be described as 'dangerously negligent' compared to DeSantis's calculated and downright evil approach to handling the pandemic. The anti-establishment / MAGAt crowd has already flocked to support him over such instances as going after Disney during the Don't Say Gay Bill controversy (reminder that the 'groomer' rhetoric that has run like a firecracker through far-right discourse was started by DeSantis' camp around this time).

I too hesitate to speculate how things will turn out in a year or two; my only point is that I underestimated his electability once, and won't be making that mistake again. At the current moment, I fear that what makes DeSantis particularly dangerous is that, with the right spin, he can be painted as a 'reasonable' alternative to the moderate conservatives / undecideds who are fed up with Trumpism, while maintaining the far-right support he's already garnered. I personally know plenty of formerly-diehard Trumpers who have already turned their backs on Trump in favor of DeSantis.

People are such sheep. Take a look deep inside of you and vote for who you really want. I dont care if its Trump. Follow your principals, not the crowd.

He may be a worse human being, but I don't think he could do as much damage as Donald Trump if he tried.
