The GOP control the House so it is likely McCarthy has to launch an investigation of Biden or they will take advantage of the 1 person requirement to find a new Speaker who will do it.

Ignoring everything else, the optics are bad.

Joe Biden's justice department raided Trump's home over classified documents last fall.

At this same time, Biden had classified documents in a closet at his place of work.

It's pretty easy to campaign on the hypocrisy of this even if the circumstances are different.

I actually hate this, because apples to apples this is going to take some heat away from Trump. The key difference here being Biden's team found the documents and immediately turn them over. Didn't require a Grand Jury, a subpoena, and several public melties from Donald Trump.

You know those assholes are going to hammer this into the ground and will make Biden a one-term president. That's fine. I guess they should make the FBI do a sweep of every single exiting president now if this is now an issue from two presidential terms.

Also, "ignoring everything else" lol. There's a lot of everything else there. It's not an apples to apples comparison, no matter how much certain parties would love to make it. It's like a drunk driver who caused a massive accident and a driver who's falling asleep at the wheel and caused an accident. At the same day, they're both in the wrong. One is significantly worse than the other.

A private office of Bidens was closing down, staffers discovered a small packet of classified information buried away among their other documents, they immediately notified the Justice Department over the breach in protocol and turned the documents over, and the Biden Administration has ordered an investigation into it.

In other words, at some point Bidens staff made a mistake in the transition from the vice presidential office to a private one in their handling of classified information, and when it was realized they rectified the situation immediately upon discovery of the mistake. Its a nothingburger issue, but Republicans will try to make a big deal about it because Trump got busted for the improper handling (and likely leaking) of boxes and boxes full classified info and denying/refusing for months to turn said documents back over and in their mind a molehill of a Democratic error is worse than a mountain of intentional Republican malfeasance.

I have no problem with the GOP having a meltdown over this. I do have a problem with them not having the same or greater melty over Trump doing it, since by all accounts Trump's case was far more egregious than Biden's.

Agreed. "It's okay if our guy does it" is a common refrain from political parties that really needs to go away. The GOP hated Trump before he was in office. Why do they need to go to bat for him? They really should focus on restoring the strength of their political system, because that's the root of all of their existing power.

Hes right, though. The majority of Americans are not overly concerned with politics. Regardless of the details, this entire situation gives the GOP an entire campaigns worth of negative ad ammunition, should Biden run for re-election, and the average American will not look into the specifics of each case when these ads are running.

on the contrary, they had their chance at meltdown when trump purposely hid the documents and refused to give them back after multiple times. with this they should sit down and shut up since biden is handling this properly without needing a raid conducted to finally get some of the documents back

Nuance doesn't really matter to the average American. We can all agree it should matter, but being real it doesnt.

So Democrats need to get their act together now on the narrative or 2024 will ne a problem. Because I guarantee you the only narrative the average American will take away here is "both took classified documents, and one was a VP" which doesn't look good on the campaign trail.

I feel I need to repeat, most of us can agree Bidens case is not as bad as Trump. Just saying, swing voters are notorious for not differentiating nuance, so please don't rely solely on it.
