[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

A man was systematically tortured for the enjoyment of others. In particular, he was stripped naked and left alone in an apartment where he was made to survive off of sweepstakes entry forms. This was all livestreamed. Even when he managed to win food, he wound up being forced to eat it raw because he hadn't yet won anything that would allow him to prepare the food.

After about a year he was told that he had won the challenge and would be taken to a studio to claim his prize. Instead they ditched him in another apartment, this time in south korea, and told him to do it again. At the end of that run they trick him into thinking he's doing this a third time, so he strips naked once again, only to reveal that he's actually won and they've brought him in front of an audience.

There were some lasting impacts on social and physical well-being, but he did get famous enough to become a stage actor / local celebrity of some sort.

So they were getting good ratings and decided to string him along like 12 consecutive times to keep it going lol? Now you gotta earn a ticket home. Ok wait its gotta be first class. Ok wait you gotta earn your pilots license and fly it yourself. OK WAIT.

Poor guy. There is no way in hell I could do that, I would definitely have a nervous breakdown without stimulation for that long.

There's a somewhat similar story; where an animation director had decided on a role but still had applicants for the audition. For some reason he gave direction to some guy to really ham it up and overact, even by anime standards. Asking him to throw in nonsensical yells and squaks and stuff. Then they invited him to a live announcement of the anime; letting him believe he had landed a starring role, only to show the demo real they had him do and made fun of how shit he is in front of a large crowd of fans already looking to harshly judge an adaptation. Just casually destroyed the man's career for a bit of 'fun'. There's more to the story but I can't remember the guy's name so I don't want to go further since I'll likely get a bunch of details wrong.

Japan is filled with bizarre reality shows, so they most likely got some form of standard contract that they have to sign that allows the production companies to do these things.

Yeah I member' this, that was the kokoro connect scandal thing. The dude's name is Mitsuhiro Ichiki.

Apparently everything turned out somewhat alright in the end, but yeah they dumped on that guy throughout that incident.

2chan posters brought attention to the situation by mass-cancelling pre-orders for that anime's dvds. 4chan dumbasses sent dick pics to a random lady that had nothing to do with the situation, =/ lol.

I think what was most telling about Japanese culture that incident was how HE reacted to it.

Like imagine someone in America or UK going through all of that. It would have ended in court, the victim would have made it his life's work to change the laws on tv cruelty, there'd be a book deal, an emotional interview with Oprah, etc.

But this guy was actually apologetic for how fucking traumatised he was. Like he was sorry to be a bother.

That is just awful. I can't believe it's legal to air a show like that, like you'd expect the government or something to intervene since that is near straight-up torture. I don't know if it reflects on the whole of Japan though every nation has had some clearly disturbed stories of reality tv. Though that is just on another level, poor guy.

It was cancelled when the government had a crackdown on "torture" shows. Speaking of which, this has led me to learn of another reality show called Born in the Wild where mothers give "all natural" birth. No doctors, hospitals, medicine, etc. Just giving birth in the woods or wherever <_<

The Japanese entertainment industry treats its comedians terribly, more so in the 90s, and that show was particularly bad even by those standards. Since the early 2000s, things have gradually getting less bad. Not because of concern for the comedians, but because of incidents where regular people (especially teenagers in bullying incidents) would copy things they saw on TV and got seriously injured. The networks got scared of getting sued, basically. IIRC the crackdown started because some kids imitated a "batsu game" (games where the loser has to endure some kind of embarrassment or physical punishment) they saw on TV and one of them died.
