Why did you do this

I was speaking to my sister about the show a bit - her friend is the storyboard director of the show. She said they're very proud of the animation, but knew the show had some heavy issues in terms of writing, since they tried to cram in tons of jokes, saw they weren't funny, then tried to cram in more.

A normal 30m show has a 22 page script, and Velma eps apparently have 28-32 per episode, which is, I guess, the idea of throwing spaghetti at a wall and seeing what will stick.

Also, not that she needs defending, but Kaling I guess had no creative control over the show - only produced and acted.

But yeah, watched the first episode recently, and it was really impossible to enjoy.

The writing is just awful

Yeah, art/animation wise its fine outside of the few times the lips dont match the dialogue. The writing is very not good overall though, but Im still curious to see where this crazy train ends up going somehow

tbh my main beef here is that it constantly attempts to be super meta without jokes to back up the commentary, as if being meta was a punchline in itself. it feels up its own ass to a highly unlikable degree.

Yeah, what I said was that the jokes are like "hey, a trope exists. That's it! That's the joke."

There is no satire or commentary, it's just saying things that exist.

So what I'm getting out of this topic as someone who doesn't even like Scooby-Do in the first place is that somehow this manages to be more offensive than the Drawn Together movie, which went out of it's way to be as aggressively bad as possible on purpose?

Based on interviews, it sounds like Kaling has literally no idea about the show at all other than that it exists and what the original premise was. I'm not actually sure if this reflects positively or negatively on her.

I mean, she what, produces and acts the main character? She doesn't write, which is the major gripe.

Congratulations hate watchers, Velma had a more successful premier than The Last of Us as a result of people just having to get a taste of something everyone agrees tastes awful!

It's not simple ratings - it's specifically shows that are being talked about. I actually can't find any solid numbers on what Velma's watch metrics are.

WB Discovery is now reporting that The Last of Us had the largest episode 1 to episode 2 viewership gain in HBO history. It was up 22% to 5.7 million viewers Sunday night.

Meanwhile I still haven't watched episode 2 because I was watching it with the folks, but my mom hates is because she "doesn't want to watch another Walking Dead spinoff".

I read one comment talking about how, by the time this season is finished, the game versions of Joel and Ellie will feel 'wrong' to a majority of people who've experienced TLOU's story. And I super do not know how to feel about that!

Last of Us is a pretty mediocre video game with amazing storytelling, so it's not too surprising that taking the gameplay out results in a quality product

I beat the show. Theres some good in there, but definitely not writing wise at all. Like imagine hiring reasonably talented animators and wasting them on a show with writing so bad its offensive to language as a whole. The Harley Quinn VD Special on the other hand is an absolute delight and more hilarious in its 44mins than Velma was in its 10 episodes

My only problem with the excellent VD Special was no King Shark other than an un-voiced montage scene, but I know Ron Funches is a busy guy.

Id have loved to see more of the side character bits they did. Golden Gliders design was too goddamn amazing for 5 seconds

She was enough of a presence in that season 3 episode that I think we'll see her again.

I hope so and hope she keeps the new design. Its amazing. I almost choked on my dinner laughing at that special

My comic knowledge is very low, but I believe shes Captain Colds sister and one of Flashs rogues for the comics at least. Im not really sure how much shes used out of his rogue gallery or any other specifics though

Speaking of Silver Surfer is he still the strongest jobber in the universe?

Golden Glider is great, but all of the Rogues are great. As an actual collective villain group they're hard to top.

Rogues by Joshua Williamson was one of the best comics last year, too!

Tar Pit and Murmur respectively.

I figured you'd like that, UE. Wizard Magazine used to outsource these little Dream Battle matches back when it still was published to top artists for relevant titles of the time. This was one of my favorites.

I've heard of Tar Pit at least, but I don't think I've ever even heard of Murmur.

You know it's bad when your character is obscure enough that people think they're some 90s alt costume for Ragdoll.

Hey, Johns' run on Flash was just bop after bop after bop. Love the Keystone Era-Rogues.

The Wally West Flash era was good for nearly it's entire run, regardless of writer. Some was better than others, but it was never bad.

Then, you know the Bart troubles.

And then the Barry troubles.

But now we're back to Wally Flash and it's the best it's been in....decades???

I actually stand by the Bart run as one that was improving constantly. It deserved more than 12 issues to develop.

I can't get over how they thought they could pull a Hal Jordan on Barry Allen.

I get why some suit at a corporate office would think it was the right call, or Didio, and I guess it was his call, but Johns should have known better. And I suppose he did the best he could, and I even liked Rebirth and what it did to Thawne....

But at the end of the day, the greatest Barry Allen story ever written was one he wasn't even in.

I call him Boring Allen for a reason

I don't even DISLIKE Barry Allen. I think he's great as a character to have as a supporting role, or a teamup book (I stand by The Button being the best part of the Williamson run), I just don't care at all when he's the lead. I'm hoping once they get back into this Justice League Incarnate stuff that he's got a good home there.
