Caught up on the Edens Zero manga. The big twist in Ch 203 was pretty great; definitely interested in how this is gonna be finished up.

Mashima's manga has always felt like it was written by an AI being fed shounem tropes, and I've always disliked his sameface art.

Nier delayed with no return date due to Covid

Potentially the truth, but that Uncle anime on Netflix got delayed due to Covid last year and some staff members came out and claimed it was just a cover for bad scheduling and crunch. Don't know if that was ever confirmed.

For clarity here, Rave Master is much, much better than Fairy Tail (At least in manga form, never actually watched it)

It's still not particularly good, but it's quite serviceable for a shounen battle series.

Covid is true, but it also had such terrible scheduling that even one thing going wrong would totally derail it and likely would've suffered delays regardless (probably later in the season though).

Yeah, it was my assumption that it was Column A and Column B.

Most anime are made down to the wire, week by week. They're not finishing these things before airing starts, that's honestly super rare.

There are exceptions but this is the norm ad fad as I know.

You sure about that? I don't think this is true...

But yeah it's fairly usual for anime productions to fly by the seat of their pants, though there are exceptions. Most episodes of Encouragement of Climb S4 were done in 2020, and the reason others took longer is due to them being animated by a single animator (this is a good thing).

Against my better judgment I decided to try out Ranking of Kings.

Ok this time everyone else was right this show is pretty good so far.

I have cooled some, but there was a solid chunk of time there while I was watching where I was honestly considering if it would be top 10 material.

Still an incredible show.

Staying up until an ungodly hour in the morning, and right before going to bed seeing the new volume of How Do We Relationship came out....

Oh well it's not like I'm gonna get a good night's sleep either way lol.

The stand powers in High Card have been a little bland, but the one revealed at the end of this new episode is honestly rad as hell and something that would be completely believable from JoJo itself.

....Although two of them so far were just straight up in Stardust Crusaders so I guess they're all JoJoesque in their own way.

High Card has all of the makings of something that's solid and plenty fun to watch, but that gets entirely forgotten about two seasons after it's done.

Which is fine. I'm definitely enjoying it so far.

I'm extremely please with this season so far.

There's a couple that are, like, borderline for me. I like Revenger and Master the Blade, but would not be terribly upset if I suddenly had to drop them.

Buddy Daddies, High Card, and and Mononogatari are drawing me in a ton, though, and there are several others than I'm thoroughly enjoying.

More seasonal drops. Don't need to see anymore of Tomo-chan is a Girl. I don't find it funny, and I honestly don't care to see the main pair get together. NieR can be considered a COVID casualty, though I wasn't really loving it anyway. Kaina and the Great Snow Sea was putting me to sleep halfway through episode 1.

I dumped Tomo-chan in 10 minutes, so I support anyone else doing so.

I know I'm late on this, but this has always been the case. If you've ever seen Evangelion and wondered why the last two episodes were like that, it's largely because of the scheduling and the pressure that caused. This isn't the only problem with the industry, either. The crazy thing is that this underpaid and overworked culture in anime production began with Astro Boy back in the 60s. So yeah, for 60 years actually working in anime has been pretty terrible for many people who do it. It's honestly hard to believe that the entire industry hasn't collapsed in on itself, but working yourself to death is a part of Japanese culture in general.

Yes. Just because South Park can get episodes written, animated, and produced in 4-5 days doesn't mean every show should.

Finished Ranking of Kings.

There was stuff to like throughout, but the first half of this show was much better than the second half. In particular, I didn't like how strong the show ended up making Bojji. I think it would have been better if they made him at best a competent fighter with the idea being that his strength lies with other aspects of his character. Also Miranjo and Bosse's character fell pretty much completely flat, which was particularly unfortunate for the last few episodes, and the way the the ending treats Miranjo is bordering on insulting.

Overall a pretty good show though with a mostly great knack for character writing and some really good direction. Also Hilling is the best.

There's some silly parts later on but I enjoyed them all. Second last episode I think it was had some ridiculously amazing animation.

I enjoyed the second half, but the pacing was super slow, an extreme contrast to the incredibly paced first half. Also some wierd character stuff towards the end, a bit too upbeat for the way the show had been presented.

Hilling is indeed the best.

For the new Netflix live-action adaptation, they sent me a video to review and check. It started with a scene in a casino, which made it very tough for me to continue. I stopped there and so only saw that opening scene. It was clearly not Cowboy Bebop and I realized at that point that if I wasnt involved, it would not be Cowboy Bebop. I felt that maybe I should have done this. Although the value of the original anime is somehow far higher now.

To be honest this look too accurate to the point where it feels like cosplay. It's almost like they're scared to even slightly adapt to the medium? The pitfall of fearing fan backlash: uncanny valley.

There won't be fan backlash if they stick to source material. There's no pitfall for lifting as much from the source as possible. Nobody gave Game of Thrones shit for almost going line for line during the first 4 seasons. The people that will watch these anime adaptions are 100% going to be fans of the manga/anime. Look at all those Resident Evil and Halo adaptions. They actively hate the source material so fans end up not watching. Who the fuck going to watch that cringe shit? Your average housewife ain't gonna watch.

I'm talking purely aesthetically here. I don't think the outfits should have been literally 1 to 1 recreations with absolutely no variation, it looks strange!

So you want Luffy to wear a straw tricorne, an eye patch and peg leg and hook for hand? Why would you want to change iconic looks?

It's up to the directing and writing to make the aesthetics match the tone.
