they make a lot more money than people in other industries

why not just go to work and think about the money and leave until you retire?

is it that bad to deal with people there if youre paid a lot? ($70K/year and up)

Usually because the work is dull and unfulfilling, the boss is a huge ass-ache, or office politics are beyond ridiculous

If it's a lot of people they typically are quitting because compensation sucks. If it's just one or two it's probably because they don't get along with the supervisor.

I was under a manager that was a complete prick. Hardly 'manages' us, as in assisting us or giving us proper instructions. Just tells us to get things done by when and when. Then he takes all the credit for the job done by our team.

I couldn't call him out because I don't want to burn bridges or have my reputation of being a grasser. But I left as soon as I could.

Having proper management and a team can really affect your morale. I worked retail for close on 10 years and honestly it was the most miserable experience of my life. Bosses always talking down to their employees, treating them like garbage and making them feel like they should be the ones thankful they even have a job.

It really messed up my mind. I graduated college last year, and my work term boss was the most pleasant person I've ever met. Someone like myself who had been broken really badly actually felt welcome in the environment, treated like a human being. Everyone pulled their weight and helped each other out instead of hindering. It all felt very foreign to me.

I had to quit that job because of medical issues which left me home ridden for close to 5 months. If I could go back I would in a heartbeat even though they are paying much less than other avenues. If even to learn more from them for a little while while I build up my skills.

There is an interesting study that was done that found that once you get above physical labor, more money quickly stops being an incentive for people to stick around and actually work harder. In any sort of environment where you require some degree of creative thinking, interest in the work and flexibility to pursue your own projects is a much stronger way of keeping people around. A lot of companies just haven't figured that out yet.

In other words, people leave their office jobs because no amount of money is enough to make them keep doing something they hate if they have the option to go do something they like for less.

The companies know, they just don't fucking care.

I make noticeably less than everybody else in my friend group from grad school (all have PhDs in computer science) since I work for the government, but I'm also the only one who hasn't hopped jobs constantly or is having panic attacks because of work. Livin da dream so far

I know a bin man who does the commercial waste. He makes like 25 an hour. And he takes on all these overtime jobs when ever possible where he makes 40+ an hour. Not bad imo.

Same. I probably hit the average of my friends but I've worked for the govt forever and I love my job. Most of my friends work in corporate and they've all hopped jobs every couple of years and always hate their jobs. My one friend literally cut his salary in half to work for a smaller company but loves his job way more now >_>

I did work in an office but had an opportunity to become an astronaut. Went to space. Lived on moon. The whole deal. Came home and offices were just too confining. I need the wide open spaces of the moon. I became an oil worker

Because that's not how it works.... assume for a moment you make 70k/y. After all expenses are taken out, you make 35k/y. If you retire today, that money is only going to last you 1 year. People would rather earn 50k/y, banking much less if they are happy working where they are. Sometimes a toxic environment isn't worth your sanity.

If your making a significant amount of money based on your area, then yes, you have the option to retire early, but that money slowly runs out and without a proper plan, your back to working in 10 years. God forbid you live in the States and don't have health care.

Also, making 70k/y is only good based on where you live. If you live in Mississippi making 70k, your doing a lot better than someone making 70k in downtown New York.
