What's the point of welfare if it's constantly kept behind more and more restrictive gates?

I was on welfare for two years and i only got $198 a month . It really helped me out, but It's not exactly a huge sum of money.

I think its sadistic and counterproductive.

The citizens who have permanent government benefits have to prove that their circumstances disqualify them from the workforce. Able bodied, able minded people who dont want to work and try to take the system might receive a few months of help, but they will hound you about working any job available (even fast food or a gas station) because the system is designed to help you get into the workforce and keep you going for a few months.

With inflation and unjustifiable price increases, I think that government issued grocery cards (SNAP?) should be expanded big time.

Most of America's social safety nets are relatively difficult to attain, a pain to maintain, & not really worth it for what you actually get. Only someone who hasn't seen how meager a social security check generally is, thinks the recipients live in some sort of luxury.

I'm no fan of the welfare state, but if we're going to try and fix it then at least do it right. It should supplement, rather than replace, low income employment.

Abolish welfare for able bodies individuals that choose not to work.

Concessions can be made for mothers with young children, but government shouldn't be daddy either.

It should be easier. People should be given UBI, free basic housing, food, water, electricity, internet, healthcare and college.

Whatever part makes it so that you need to make sure welfare recipients aren't on drugs or drinking. That part is good if it's still implemented or ever was.

I used to hold this sentiment back when I was a young, dumb conservative. Now the only welfare cuts I support are the removal of tax breaks for the rich.

The idea that the "welfare state" is creating freeloaders and bums is a lie perpetuated by the ultra rich and anyone gullible enough to buy it (the latter being a group I once fell into). The welfare we actually have is super difficult to obtain and is barely enough to survive.

A stronger safety net won't save all poor people, but it will give them a better chance to find a home, eat, and even get a job, contrary to what conservatives like to say.

Yes, I spent a few of my teenage years in a mobile home and a lot of my neighbors were on welfare. And growing up in a low income rural area you better believe lots of people were on various forms of welfare.

A large number of people I knew were abusing it and not trying to find real work.

Actually it should be expanded with requirements and accomodations to work if able bodied.

Biggest problem with welfare is the second you start working you lose your benefits and end up worse off than if you just stayed on welfare. Thus incentivizing staying on welfare.

Imma be honest. I have zero idea how hard it is to get on welfare now. I'd think it should be made easy because it's intended to help people that are struggling already.

Any civilised country should have a robust welfare system that is there to serve its citizens.

Should be expanded.

Why should it be harder to get. Welfare is a safety net for people so they don't just starve, because they are currently jobless. If anything Welfare should be more accessible.

The problem isn't people "not having motivation" to find work. The problem is the current system be live or die based on the job you have.
