Just looked up his movies on imdb. He's got 36 directing credits. You take anyone off the street and, gun to their head, they could maybe name six of those movies. And people only actually like three of those. The rest of his movies have average to awful ratings. He's got a terrible batting average. Godfather and Apocalypse Now deserve all their accolades but why is he held up as one of the greatest directors of all time rather than that guy who made a few good movies forty years ago?

The things is, those 3 movies he made aren't regarded as good movies, they're regarded as some of the greatest of all time

Dracula (director's cut) is also very good despite Keanu Reeves

Cause anyone who makes movies that are considered perhaps some of the best films ever made should be held in high regard?

But there's plenty of classics made by otherwise not outstanding directors that are basically remembered as one hit wonders. Whereas Coppola is up their with Kubrick even though Kubrick made half as many movies and all but, like, three are inarguable classics.

Anyways yeah. Godfather 1/2 are 10/10 movies. Even 3 is a tad underrated, still a solid 7/10, only bad by godfather standards. After that he has share of flops

Apocalypse Now is mindbendingly good imo

I think you just answered your own question. Coppola may not have the same consistency of other all-time greats, but his top three movies (just top two imo, since I'm not a huge fan of Godfather Part II) are of such a high quality that they automatically earn him a seat at the table. The Godfather and Apocalypse Now aren't just great films - they are timeless masterpieces that still serve as the pinnacle of their genres.

lots of well regarded directors with long careers have had their ups and downs, the ups usually becoming their legacy. And he also directed The Conversation

Actually 4 - its a little overshadowed by the rest of his 70s run, but The Conversation is still regarded as one of the best films of the decade.

Like, nobody cares about the other swings anymore, they pretty much just talk about the one.

Id say a football quarterback who led the team through a legendary, Superbowl-winning season but had an otherwise mediocre career would be more apt/less hyperbolic
