Yamoto literally says that she claims to be male because Oden is male. Shes just larping Oden just like it says in her intro box. She also says that Odens journal is her bible. She based her entire identity on Oden so whatever Oden identifies as she will do the same.

Im no expert, but I dont think that people just decide to be trans because they idolized someone.

The worst part of your argument is that people don't "choose" to be trans, they are trans. And yes, it can and does happen that trans people make that realization about themselves (or accept it, or go public about it) due to another person's influence on their life.

Your argument comes down to semantics and cherry-picking of specific lines. It really doesn't stand up to the character's entire representation during the entire Onigashima raid and what comes after.

Yamato claiming to be Oden is played as a gag for laughs -- Yamato being trans is not played as a gag and is actually handled in a serious manner. If Yamato were cis male and claimed to be Oden due to idolization, it would be treated in exactly the same way, just without boobs.
