I remember playing DOTA in 2003 all the time. I had no idea it would turn into a genre. With it, "footie" maps, and RPG maps, I was able to take a break from sucking at traditional WCIII matches.

I never branched off from the original DOTA. I felt like when the genre went mainstream, a secret gem of mine had been exposed for everyone. I didn't really want to share DOTA/mobas with others for some reason. I mean, none of this is logical, but just how I reacted to the genre's growth.

Do people even still play MOBAs?

I've been playing dota off and on since its inception. It was my main game for years, though now I mostly just watch tournaments and binge for a few weeks every once in a while.

Played League "seriously" for about three years from 2011-2014, and then hard quit. Never went back to it. Everything about the game is toxic.

Serious? Nah. I don't need to go through the torture of Ranked to know I'm trash at the game.

I like playing League casually. Just ARAM or URF if it's on. It's good for playing with friends when you don't really have anything else you want to play.

Played LoL "seriously" from I think 2010-2018 ish. Just missed Masters my last season. God, what a massive waste of time playing that cancerous game was.

No, and "serious" is the toxic mindset that lead us to esports which ruin every game. I hated DOTA because nobody had the correct map or would let you download and everyone was expected to be pro tier. I seriously joined a "newbie" game where my entire team quit because I didn't take the meta character for them.

I played Tides of Blood which I really enjoyed; except my hero of choice was an assassin who's ultimate teleported ti allies to finish off enemies--queue the endless whining about kill stealing.

Jesus, LOL. Where the Holy Meta is so rigid that every character has an assigned lane that must go down, where a support killing the escaping hero is worse than letting them get away, because the carry needed that kill. How dare you practice a new character in a bot stomp match, go read a guide online before you waste L33Tpeen's precious time, and he spams the Surrender

On paper this is a genre I show love. The mechanics hit the right boxes for me. The players ruin it every time.

I guess I should have state that playing "seriously" is just playing with some regular commitment to getting better. Pretty broad, I know, but I didn't want to seem like I was just asking about those to compete in tournaments or stream.

I'm done with MOBAs... I first played DOTA and I remember going into "NOOB ONLY" games only for some random person to join and go 1v5 with a support hero most of the games. I never got very good because of that, but I still liked the idea of it.

So I played LoL when it came out, and was pretty disappointed as I recall at launch most games were just a Jax (I think that was the name?) pub stomping with the forums full of "get good" and "he's only good in random matches" which was surely over 90% of the matches played. Stopped playing for a while, came back had a decent amount of fun for a while. Quit playing again once LoL started developing it's meta. I don't play the game to get locked into some kid yelling at me telling me I have to jungle or support because he "called it" and I'm locked into a 20-30 minute game because I'll get punished for leaving.

Started playing DOTA 2 because it didn't have that awful meta, but lost interest quickly because I was tired of the toxicity in mobas not just targeted at me but the rage it brought out of me myself. MOBAs aren't healthy to play.

Yeah I took league really seriously from 2016-2021. Without a doubt the worst game I ever played. I've already explained why its a terrible game owned by terrible people maintained by terrible devs with a terrible playerbase over and over again, I don't really feel like doing it a 90th time. Everyone on the league board here loves to cope too. Accurate representation of the average league player

I put a lot of effort into LoL but eventually quit because my gf at the time got mad I'd zone in on something other than her for like 30 minutes at a time. No way I could get into a moba these days because toxicity ruins games for me.

Such statements never made any sense to me. You get placed with people who're roughly as good or as bad as you are, if you couldn't win/carry the game, you weren't good enough.

It doesn't feel that way. Because of how it snow balls I remember always feeling like I'd have a good game and the other team surrendered at the 15 minute mark resulting in really unsatisfying victories. While my bad games were bad, I'd have a feeder or I'd have the ass clown who keeps crossing the river when you say "I can't see anyone on the other team don't cross the river" and it's obvious we are losing but everyone refuses to surrender and the enemy team is milking it for all it's worth and you're stuck for 30+ minutes in hell before they finally get around to finishing it. I would rage so hard at it.

Maybe my win rate was close to 50/50. I don't remember, but it wasn't evenly distributed. Typically it was 5 or so losses in a row then maybe I get kicked down into a lower bracket and I win a few super easy games before going back into a higher bracket and losing multiple matches in a row there was no chance my team was going to win before I had the opportunity to win again.

The game was really stressful, and it was super toxic. I was super toxic when I played it. I played mobas for like... 10 years. I can't imagine wanting to go back and play it again.

I'm pretty sure you can't hit the 1k limit for the BP by winning games and doing quests. You usually have to dunk in 50-100 bucks more to get to the 1000th level. Even worse if you wanted the baby roshes which they stopped doing for some reason.

2800 here on dota 2.

still playing here and there these days, took some long hiatuses but I watched almost every TI.

2014-ish was my peak in terms of relative skill but I regret that I didn't really push my understanding of the game, my limits, my heroes' limits, and how to improve as a player. that really held me back and I ended up quitting because I was frustrated that I was losing. and my friends quit too.

I think that mindset is where the toxicity comes from, nobody is on the same page when it comes to what competitive matches are really for. most people's goal is to climb the ladder which means you have to win. but learning must come first. and competitive matches are the best place to learn. and you learn most from failure.

Yep, basically. Towards the end, I just played whatever I would want strictly top (usually Illaoi for the lolz), dominate lane, lane push hard (eventually the entire team is ganking me top), and essentially ignoring what else the rest of the team was doing. Considering whether winning or losing in that game is largely arbitrary outside of professional play, I figured that I might as well get to have fun, rather than worrying about the myth of carrying the team. And the end result W/L was essentially the same (hell, I'm pretty sure it improved, seeing as so many resources would have to be sent top).

Does Paladins count? It's got a buy system and different perk loadouts that you can make. It's like Overwatch meets LoL, it's not that bad but I don't have the time to memorize everything to play better. I never know if I'm picking a bad 1v1 to get into or not.
