I assume globby has an actual emergency brake on his

Did you think that was a clever comment? Because its really stupid.

I dont have a bicycle. I have a motor bike. And the equivalent to the brake youre talking about would probably be locking the front wheel and handlebars when you get off, which I do because I dont want my bike stolen.

I've never really used it except messing around with it. pretty much everywhere i park is flat and even the places with an incline i still didn't use it and didn't have any problems. i don't know anybody that actually uses it. never once noticed anyone either setting or releasing it while i was driving with them.

in drivers ed they never even mentioned it on the written test or the driving test. honestly the results surprised me. i thought it would be like 75% no and the majority of the yes would just be for a manual.

Gas or electric?

Do you take your helmet everywhere you go so people know

If you found that amusing, it really doesnt say anything positive about you.

Its a petrol bike.

I take my helmet where I take my bike. But also, owning a bike here wouldnt be something you would show off because everybody rides a motorbike.

I love it here. Plus, plenty of motorcycles are no louder than cars. A lot of the locals are on very low powered models.

But yeah, certain places get really loud but thats true of just about any capital city.

Yes. But I grew up in the Appalachian mountains with a stick shift. If I didn't park in 1st gear with the handbrake you're liable to roll somewhere you don't want to roll to.

Im a city boy. More rural areas can be nice for a week or so, but after that I tend to find them a bit tedious.

It is about as incorrect as me not keeping two hands on the steering wheel at all times.

You are going to have to get over the fact that people aren't following recommendations, manuals and authority like the gospel. There is a such thing as not actually as necessary safety recommendations as some passionately think are. There is not some wide pandemic of cars randomly rolling away because the emergency wasn't used on flat surfaces. It's not even kind of common.

The people around me, other cars and myself will do just fine without using the emergency breaks on a flat surface. The car does not have even close to a high probability of rolling away. No amount of finger wagging is going to change that.
Its about as incorrect as not wearing a seatbelt, which is incorrect every time youre driving and not wearing a seat belt. The hand brake is there for a reason. An extra layer of protection in case the parking gear fails, although maybe you also park in neutral? That would also be wrong

I guess its the area. In my area, most motorcycles are much louder than cars. There are cars that can get loud, as wellBut most of the time, its usually the motorcycles that are loud

It's not as incorrect as not wearing a seat belt. The risk level are worlds apart comparing seat belts and the emergency brakes on a flat surface.

Your tangent on parking on neutral is not even trying. I assume you think you are making some great case for why someone not using the emergency brakes on a flat surface, should. In reality, shit like that just comes off as funny for how much it spins the discussion. No one here implied or claimed they park on neutral, as using the normal brakes by placing the gearshift in park is a thing. This "parking in neutral" spin is not even trying.

I will continue to not use the emergency brakes on flat surfaces. The risk is no where near a threat to me or anyone that you try to claim.

Engaging your parking brake also prevents unnecessary wear and tear on the parking pawl. It's a no brainer to use it.

Reading this topic was pretty eye opening. Full disclosure I was never taught to use it by any family or driver's ed and no one I've ever been a passenger with has ever used it. Ever. Even when I was getting my driving hours in by the instructor and did the driving portion of the exam and got full marks on it no one ever told me to do such a thing. I thought it was only there for if the normal brakes didn't work, hence emergency brake. Been driving for 20 years. >_>

Guess I learned something today. But I live in a very flat area with no hills anywhere, I can't remember th ae last time I parked onn incline. I've only had one transmission issue once in my life and that was an old junker I bought for like $500 on craiglist lol so I just junked it and got something with less miles on it.

Not sure what kind of stress can occur on the transmission when on a flat surface.. that is assuming it's truly flat. Reading through the first page I read earthquakes and someone hitting your car.

Why don't we throw in some more reasons?

A bear decides to romance the exhaust pipe.

A boulder rolling down a mountain strikes it.

A strongman tries to see if he can push your parked car out of it's space.

A Randy Savage impersonator performs a flying elbow off of your house into the car.

An errant harpoon from a whaling ship knifes through your front end.

Your parking space suddenly becomes pitched as a landslide sweeps the majority of your property away.

Why is CE so weird about something as trivial as this? Jeez. People's social skills really got stunted around here, lol.

Anyways, if we're talking about the emergency break? No. I only use it on steep hills or inclines, and in my entire life from a kid to driving and being a passenger in 100+ people's cars, I've never once seen someone put it on that wasn't on a steep incline.

I also kinda hate it as well because on the occasions I've had to use it on inclines, once or twice I drove quite the distance without turning it off. So I'm sure my car was happy about that.

so, in your opinion, someone choosing to abide by the way you are factually supposed to use a parking brake (every time you park) = having stunted social skills? lmao fuck off with this fucking bullshit. you people don't even realize how fucking ridiculous you are sounding with your mental gymnastics for why you want to use your car improperly.

Parked at my friends once, hung out with them for a while, then we got up to go to the store, went out the door and they were like "uh, where's your car?"
Initial thoughts went to it being stolen, and then I looked down the street and there it was up on the sidewalk on the other side of the street and partially in someone's bushes with police and other people kind of standing around it very confused. Turns out I forgot to put on the parking brake (I usually do). Needless to say after that I made sure to always put on my parking brake. For the heck of it, I also usually put it in the reverse gear of the slope, so if facing downhill I leave it in reverse, if uphill I leave it in first.

Given the level of exaggeration I'm seeing in this topic of people clutching their pearls about not using the emergency brakes on a flat road, this is incredibly moot.

People aren't putting their cars in neutral to park their cars, yet some here act as if people are.

You have people in this topic acting like if others aren't using the emergency brake on flat roads, lives and property are at a severe risk of danger. Not hills, or slopes, enclaves of some kind, but a flat road. 'The car will just act like its in neutral, and hit something!!!' Which just isn't true, despite all the sky is falling rhetoric.

That'spretty much, NOT this topic.
No one here is telling you, you shouldn't use your emergency brakes. Second this is not like jaywalking on what you are implying to be a busy freeway.

Jaywalking on a busy freeway poses a much greater risk than not using the emergency brakes on a flat road. Not sure where people are getting this the sky is falling mentality like there's a great risk here.

Like the TC already posted, this is like jaywalking on a non busy road that cars barely ever pass. You're not going to spontaneously explode if you jaywalk on such an unbusy road.

If you want to use your emergency brakes on a flat road, then do it. If you don't, then dont. No one here is arguing you need to stop using your emergency brakes.

Buddy, your post proves my point exactly, thank you. No one with normal social skills gets as upset as yourself there. Your mental gymnastics are quite absurd if you think normal functioning adults in the real world give a second thought to this question and get that bent out of shape over it.
