I also work in such a store and have no problem with people coming through with more as long as they're sensible. 14 items? Go for it. 20 items when the express lane is quiet and the other lanes are busy as hell? Sure. 30 items just because you can't be bothered waiting 1 minute at another lane? Fuck off. I am pretty insistent on that people actually do it themself though (for context all our express lanes are self service; all our non-express lanes are staffed).
