Prominent? I'm the only person in this topic who even knows who she is and that's because of her work trying to get translators and localizers proper credit for their work on their projects. The people that know her are the ones that follow and support her, and the people who make it their cause to declare her the worst, in whatever form that ends up taking.

Im not following the Persona credit stuff since I havent played the originals (or any of them, really). But even then, if we assume shes doing this as a good deed, are you saying stuff like her attempted gay erasure is fine then? One good deed cancels a bad one? Enlighten me.

The truth is "general opinion" isn't against localizers. They're frankly a silent partner of the industry and they really shouldn't be. Millions of people enjoy their work and the reason people are into these games in the first place is because of localization.

When was the last time something was actually near-universally praised as good localization?

FFIV and Ghost Stories were literal decades ago. Cite something more recent in the little time we have left.

The problem with citing something more recent is that localizations as a whole have become better, so the "good" ones don't really stand out anymore so much as the bad and/or lazy ones do.

Why would people be praising localizations? Unless they're notably bad, there's no reason to comment on them.

Every Uchikoshi game.

Final Fantasy puts out banger locs.

Dragon Quest XI, especially the genius who did the mermaid language.

Too many anime to count, but big ups to recent awesome ones Chainsaw Man, Aggretsuko, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.

But those are just my opinions on some standouts.

Lets go with Yakuza.

By my understanding, nothing about it is censored, taken out, or whatever, unless theres copyright issues. No major rewrites, no blatant changes that look out of place, save for random swears turning into holy shitballs or the like.

The authentic Japanese experience without treating its audience like clueless children or tourists.

So yes, thats praiseworthy localization, Ill give you that.

Again, this is your filter. I've found every Fire Emblem game and Persona game I've played of quality loc, if not remarkable. Some better than others.

"The localization discourse" is a fine conversation, but when people lead off with their bitterness towards the process as a principle, that's not "discourse". That's just bitterness.

Oh, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 in particular as a stand out also.

I will say that Persona localization discourse is an odd standout though, because its detractors tend to be ones who think it should be *more* censored. Age gap relationships and poor LGBT representation are the commonly cited examples.

I will point out that the whole thing we're arguing about, the first post's subject, was not "removed content". It was just rewritten and recontextualized to not be the grooming of a child.

You can still have Alear S-Rank Anna and hand her the ring, with all the attendant benefits. All that changes is the implications of their relationship.

The conversation of whether to, say, not have Kawakami be a relationship option in Persona 5 is a more complex topic, because at that point, you'd be removing scenes.

The fact that Joker can date his teacher in the English language version is not the loc team's "fault". It's on the writers of the story, and they bear the criticism.

Honestly I don't think we have enough posts left to go that deep into it.

Speaking of which, let's be honest. When you stop thinking like a horny teenager, the Kawakami/Joker relationship is incredibly creepy and inappropriate.

The issue tbh, for me, is that I am not actively seeking out what changes were made, so to me, that's just the way it is. As long as the story/dialogue/va ain't bad, I'm typically satisfied.

Of course, some localization changes I end up liking, one of which, is a very controversial, perhaps even, bad take, that I included in my sig B)

Look alls I'm saying is that I was there in the early days and know how rough it was and I still got into these games and anime because someone took the time.

The quality across the board has only got better, has led to a lot of memories, and it's a damn important job that deserves more credit.
