Fire Spin and Fire Blast are the only fire move it gets. They didn't even code in A Flamethrower TM even though Ice Beam and Thunder Bolt have TMs. WOW

flamy boi. Articuno and Zapdos learn Blizzard and Thunder at 51, but Moltres gets Leer for some reason (probably a bug since they're one number off in the code).

Gen I Fire Spin was overpowered. Same with Wrap and Bind.

gen 1/2s movepools were so shit

Why would those who have mastered the art want to learn such novice moves?

Charizard couldn't learn Fly until Yellow.
Dragonite couldn't learn Fly until Gen 2.

Moltres can learn Tombstoner, though, so there is that.

The hands are the same but blue now. The mouth is the same but blue. The tendrils on top are the same but black now. And they both have a purple body. Aesthetically it makes perfect sense for Venonat to evolve into Butterfree based on design elements alone.

No one old enough remembers the struggle to finally learn flamethrower in pokemon Crystal, literally once every Wednesday (real world time) goldenrod city radio station would hold a challenge and you'd get to pick one pokemon to teach any of the big 3 moves, those being ice beam, thunderbolt, and flamethrower. So instead of having a tm, you got 50 chances spread out over a full year to learn the move Flamethrower.

It was the only way to have a mewtwo with flamethrower, a game changing move.

The struggle was real

I dont know why they never gave it a tm and made flamethrower so artificially coveted

Get this. Aerodactyl couldn't learn Rock Slide in Gen I. Gen I was fucking stupid. Its only saving grace is that without the Special Split, some Pokemon weren't the donkeys they were in Gen II and onward. Tentacruel and Hypno were actually usable.

It was actually pretty broken. Weak as it was, it prevented the opponent from attacking while it was in effect.

I think it blocked switching too? Or was that only from Gen 2 and above when it was changed to a DOT that they could still attack through?

Actually, it wasn't a radio challenge. Some guy outside of the Game Corner would offer to teach one of the moves to one of your Pokemon for 4000 Coins.

Yes, that was a Gen 2 change. In gen 1, you could still switch out during trapping moves.

scyther couldn't learn any non-normal attacking moves until pokemon yellow... where they finally saw fit to give it wing attack (base power 35) at level 50

meanwhile even in yellow, pinsir could still not learn any attacking moves that weren't either normal or fighting, making it the only pokemon (well ok also magikarp) that could not damage gengar in any way

Pretty sure Seismic Toss and Bide would fail since they're Fighting and Normal respectively.

Mimic, you'd have to be very lucky about which move you copy and hope that it doesn't kill you first with your 55 base Special.

Yeah. Night Shade worked on Normal and Psychic types too (remember, Ghost, well just Lick really, was bugged so it didn't work on Psychic types).
