It's based on the first campaign of Critical Role, the most popular D&D livestream which is played by prominent voice actors. As such, it's an adult fantasy series with an all-star voice cast including David Tennant, Lance Reddick, Cree Summer, Billy Boyd, Rory McCann, just to name a few. The action scenes are fantastic and the story's pretty great.

The biggest miss for a lot of people is the humor, but that's only a major issue in the first two episodes.

I thought the first campaign was them going underground and fighting a psychic beholder called K'Varn?

That was the first arc of their campaign, but they cut that bit out of the show. The show started as a Kickstarter project for one twenty-two minute episode with a stretch goal for a second one (this is why the first two episodes of the show are a little disconnected from the first season's main plot). When they absolutely shattered that goal, they extended it into a full season covering the Briarwood arc. While the Underdark arc was enjoyable, most people agree that the Briarwood arc is when the show became truly great.

There are also a few other reasons for it. The Underdark arc is when they still had Orion Acaba, a...problematic player, as part of the cast and they didn't want his character in the show. It didn't really relate to any of the character's backstory or goals, it was jut them helping out a friend. It didn't lead into any other of the main story arcs. And perhaps most importantly, it was an arc about a beholder enslaving the elder brain of a mind flayer city. Both beholders and mind flayers are copyrighted by WotC and the show is very careful to be legally distinct from D&D.

RIP Tiberius.

I'm currently in the Slayer's keep ark just listening while I bike to work so I don't know too much. But their episodes take a bit and I enjoy them.

Orion is really an interesting case. He wanted so badly to be the main character in his D&D game. And now his old D&D game is irrefutably the most famous one in history with hundreds of thousands of people knowing the rest of his group while him and his character has been excised as thoroughly as possible.

And if you're on the Slayer's Take arc, you've not even seen him at his worst. God, the fucking mirrors.

I actually skipped the real episode of Critical Role to watch them already lol.

I really enjoyed their totally-not-a-beholder.
