English is a disaster of a language. The word "subtle" was stolen from old French, mangled through a vowel-shift or two, then American conflation of T & D happened.

Probably used to be pronounced differently in the past but as with many language changes, the pronunciation changed over time

American English is actively decaying all the vowels into being schwa.

Obviously American (or maybe Canadian?). T and D are ambiguous in the middle of some/most words.
"medal", "meddle", "metal", and "mettle" are pronounced identically in most dialects of American English. Maybe not "mettle", but you have to be intentional about it.

This is why I find it hilarious that Americans often use water as a way of claiming that the British are silly in the way they pronounce things, given that they:

  1. Use a very uncommon way of saying it to try to mock all Brits.
  2. For the most part, cant actually say the word properly themselves either.

Yeah, American English is fucked up. We borrowed so many words from other languages and made up pronunciations. Its weird. Im so glad I grew up learning it.
