Doesn't surprise me, it's not like the dude is an actual actor. He just brings his fat stoner guy energy to every role and people eat it up unfortunately. I've been hoping for years he'd get cancelled for something because you know he's got skeletons in his closet somewhere.

Tbh I feel like I've been selling Jack Black short because I previously felt the same way. He was great in Psychonauts 2 as well. The guy felt like he had real enthusiasm for the project in the preview videos. His Bowser is going to be one of the standouts of the whole film, I'm positive. While some of his co-stars are phoning it in he's giving his A game.

It mostly just doesn't seem like it's worth the pay off. Is there anyone who is going to go see the Mario movie because of who the cast is? Why are you paying Chris Pratt prices for a movie that doesn't need his draw?

I doubt voice work costs that much. Not compared to live action at least.

There's probably a lot of feedback in the background they have where it does make an impact. Like maybe there's an automatic negative perception for a significant amount of people that it's just for kids if there's no star power in it. I remember a reviewer whining about Tails being the game VA in the Sonic 2 movie.

Obviously hiring a famous actor makes a difference in a lot of cases, and not just in animation. People are more likely to go see a movie with Brad Pitt than John Smith who never acted in a movie before. If there's a movie people aren't sure about they're more likely to go see it based on star power.
