Federal level is still 7.25 which is mind blowing and I wonder who and were are paying that AND accepting that. Even doubling it doesnt get to 15 which should be the new min wage. Republicans will never raise it and prefer the laissez faire approach. Democrats will campaign on it and ultimately do nothing because political repercussions.

Right?

I wonder how many people from blue states would be willing to move to other states if they might have a chance at a decent minimum?

Most places here start at $7.50, when I first moved here and had 15 years management experience with two companies, I applied for a temporary fill in job until I got into my career, and they offered me $8.25 an hour due to my extensive experience. I declined lol.

Probably not too many. It's difficult to save any money for moving expenses, let alone even own a vehicle to travel out of state if you make $7.25/hr.

I'm considering moving to Minnesota, but wages there are so terrible :( The whole point is looking for somewhere I can afford a home to start, which won't happen if I have to cut my own earnings to live there

Yeah I live in the mountains, most of my land is just forest, this town population is under 1,000 also. The place is really pretty, tons of natural waterfalls and lakes, wide variety of wildlife and cool birds. The quality of people here is bottom rung, which is really my issue. Town was littered with Trump shit for years, etc.

You can get an apartment here with water and electric included for $600 a month.

Yep. In fact by the time we get 15 the cost of living will only be even higher and nothing will force corporations to keep prices low. Actually, the government forces farms and the like to under produce things like milk to keep prices high.

Because fast food work isn't nearly as demanding as being an emergency responder or factory worker or construction worker or a nurse.

Why should fast food workers get just as much when what they do isn't even as demanding?

Because the amount in discussion is fair pay for labor.

Your question should be "why aren't emergency responders making more".

Also, depending on the specific role I could easily argue that fast food is more demanding than construction or factory work.

so much stress.

on topic. cant get a balance where everyone gets increased wage without raising everything else by alot.

It's not even the customers, the sheer atmosphere is so incredibly rushed and stressful. And the kind of management that gets hired there tends to be much more willing to abuse and take advantage. I wouldn't be at all surprised to learn that fast food companies are the number 1 source of wage theft.

I've done factory work. A lot of it is incredibly simple and redundant. Didn't have any of the rushed atmosphere or stress I dealt with at fast food, and I also had FAR less issues with management, though that's a pretty small sample size.

corporate profit has increased massively over the past ~40 years. wages have not. if minimum wage had kept pace with inflation it would be... I don't remember exactly, but something like $28 an hour (I'm on my phone rn and it's hard to switch tabs like this)

I've also done factory work; specifically cleaning silk screens in a textile printing facility. dirtier work than fast food, certainly (though not all the jobs in that building were that dirty), but significantly less stressful. the hours were much better and more consistent too

I'll also say: probably dirtier on average, but I got to be the first person to clean our five year old restaurant's icebox of mold . My best friend had to clean the inside of the shake machine, which was caked in an unidentifiable black substance. Fast food can be INCREDIBLY disgusting at times.

Working in a fast food kitchen is really no different than factory work, you repetitively assemble orders for people at a fast pace, like a picker at a factory, except there is more to track and do at fast food. I dont get why it has the shit reputation it does, it's hard work and sure as hell isn't worth $8 an hour pay for the job it entails.

Can he? Isnt it supposed to be apolitical and independent from government? I understand why hes doing it, problem is that those who suffer the most are the poor. Inflation is big part in due to those with too much adquisitive power

This. I cant say enough how incredibly awful it is working in the customer service / retail industry. S*** has destroyed me physically and, more importantly, mentally.

Biggest mistake of my life was putting myself in that kind of environment right after high school in favor of college (partly because I didnt really understand how college works). Its fucked me up more than I probably even realize.

Working those kinds of jobs isnt like the movies or TV.
