The one time it's actually worthwhile to order a physical chequebook.

As a banker.... you're making a terrible mistake. Unless you want to take all of her savings. Then she's the one making a terrible mistake

It would be the end of my relationship if I had a joint bank account with the live-in GF.

By sharing a bank account, you're just asking to open a can of worms. You're doing nothing but setting yourself up for constant arguments over money.

It's best to do what we do: Save receipts for every joint purchase, then split the bill at the end of every month. This eliminates fighting over money because you both pay your share yet still get to spend your money the way you see fit, without being judged by the other.

Honestly I don't understand why anyone would want to share a bank account with their SO.

I imagine it helps with loans and maybe gets you better savings to have a joint account. IDK if my lady and i will ever join accounts. I could see us maybe opening another account to share.
Right now, we do what most said and just split our costs. I already have given her money in the past, so there's always that option if one of us needs a little help.

I don't see the problem if it's used for specific shared expenses. My partner and I have a shared account where we contribute the same amount per month, which is used for shared groceries and eating out.

The girl Im seeing is from Honduras and if things go further I could see opening a joint account because allegedly immigration officials look into shit like that for relationship validity or whatever. I dont think Id ever use for more than the rent though.

I always thought that was weird that they look for that Even in a relationship where I lived with the person, I wouldnt have one But I guess they look into a lot of stuff, so Idk

I never saw the point of a joint account, it is just another reason to argue about money. Like, if my SO wants to buy an expensive thing, they can, as long as they are still able to pay their share of the bills. Same with me.

I just added her to mine and it became ours. No fighting about money as hers is mine and mine is hers.

Please explain

You're giving your partner the ability to absolutely obliterate your future life should anything happen to your relationship. Since you have equal access to the funds, she can literally withdraw everything and leave with it any time she wants and you have zero legal recourse. Of course you think your relationship is an exception. So does everyone else. I've seen it happen way too many times

Worst idea of all time, everyone has their own experience but mine held my income hostage and always called me whenever I spent a cent on bubble gum.

Granted she saved money I spent it. Towards the end of my marriage it got tired real quick though and when things take a turn for the worse you would be surprised how fast a SO can wipe that account. 20k gone overnight.

Like I mentioned I can speak to what I happened to me but everyone has their own experiences some good and some bad at first everything was fine and I didn't mind.

Oh and in court a Joint bank account is everyone's(your's/hers) money.

Somewhat similar to my experience.

We agreed that my money would go into savings and hers would go towards paying bills, and if she needed extra for any bills, she'd pull from the savings. She wiped out the entire account one day saying that it was "what I owed her" for paying the bills every month, and there was nothing I could do about it.

I can see making a separate joint account that both parties contribute to to fund joint expenses, but giving someone else access to your personal account is a big yikes.

We definitely did not do the latter haha.
were each putting 40% of our pay into joint savings, another 20% in checking, and keeping 40% for ourselves.

She also makes nearly 3 times my salary so I dont think I need to worry about her needing my money

The only way this works is if you both also maintain separate bank accounts and each contribute a set fixed monthly amount to the joint checking for shared expenses (joint savings is a silly idea, no purpose).

for example you each contribute $200/ month for shared expenses but have your own sep accounts.

whose idea was this?

it actually sounds like this is really just a way to gain control over the other person in the relationship.

Damn, everyone's hating on the joint account. I got on my wife's account shortly after our wedding. Made sense as we owned the house together and both knew of each other's financial status.

We are both similarly frugal and most of the time we spend money it is together. We don't micromanage each other's spending and trust one another to not do something crazy without first talking to the other person.

I understand it could be a slight headache if we got divorced, but whether it's joint or not, any accounts you have will come into play.

My spouse and I had separate checking and savings accounts, and we were together for 18 years.

My grandparents had separate accounts and they were married for over 50 years! Which was silly, really, since my grandfather was the sole breadwinner, my grandmother had no income at all (other than Social Security when she was older), so all of "her" money came from my grandfather.
