Yea I know it has happened before but that was hilarious. Probably a modern classic.

The "cause we're black" line seemed unscripted judging by how many broke character off it.

It's been one of the show's gimmicks for decades. It happened a few times for real in the 70s and 80s but afterwards it became obvious.

Every time I see that moment, I can't decide who's being a bigger dick, Kaufman or Richards. They were both being pretty shitty.

This. I mean, ad-libbing is good but breaking character is at least unprofessional and at best makes it look like you're doing it on purpose to avoid having to write an actual joke.

Look at Jimmy Fallon, he basically got famous for corpsing and everyone he worked with hates him for it.

It was a great episode. I get the feeling if other sketches from episode got posted on CE it wouldnt get as much backlash as this thread got.

Breaking character is great if it's not a regular occurrence. That first Debbie Downer skit with Lindsay Lohan was amazing. They honestly should've just retired it immediately after because they were never gonna catch the same magic <_<

Even when breaking is good though, the humor isn't in the character breaking. It's still the ad-lib or just the delivery being so good it causes the other actor to break.

Like, Colin Mochrie was famous for making other people break, the humor was still ultimately in his delivery of the bit, not the fact that "Oh look they couldn't even stay in character! How funny/casual!"
