I remember playing Chrono Cross on Bleem, there was a tough boss, and after him you gained 5 party members.

Unfortunately, there was a maybe 50/50 chance playing it in Bleem that the game will freeze when you got a character.

I had to spend roughly a week fighting that boss to get through it.

Tbf Chained Echoes had a horrible one. It was basically a fight against a valkyrie and her doubles and there were these null all shields. I was stuck in overheat the whole time. It sucked but I beat it.

Honestly the serpent in Golden Sun: The Lost Age pissed me off when I was a kid because I did not know you could go to the left of the entrance of the dungeon lol

I had an experience like that in Raidou Devil Summoner 1. Man I was so paranoid and focused for that Nyx fight.

Final Fantasy 7, I wound up in an endless loop because Vincent had transformed and he and the boss kept healing each other after Cloud and my other party member died.

I never used Vincent again after that.

Nothing like saving after a battle only to get locked into a battle with a boss I am not leveled or built to fight. Great my memory card was full and I had only one save.

Oh God, that piece of shit. I got to the point where I had basically literally ran out of shit because the fight takes forever and I just made peace with looking up the ending on YouTube, because I knew I could never force myself to do that again.

I ended up winning, but goddamn, what a disappointing note to end the game on.

Legend of Dragoon while cool. I burned out on again the last time I played it had such a crazy ending. I dipped out before it got really spacial. Just the story was so over my head. I remember FFT did this but back then I didn't over think so much and took it more at face value.

Oh, shoutout to Mysterious Figure in KH: Birth By Sleep. Specifically fighting him as Terra.

Game overing on Nyx Avatars final form with <10% of its HP remaining in Persona 3.

Just last night I was doing the third set of Remembrance bosses in Dragon Quest XI:Def Ed. One of them gets like a dozen hits each round, every hit has a chance to paralyze or confuse someone.

First boss in Trails of the Sky II on nightmare mode

'Ey you guys like my current cut mentioning a new jrpg. I surprised myself. I am trying to think of another, but I don't think I can top the Chained Echoes one.

Hmm.....Dragon Warrior VII had some fights that reminded me that training can help but hah I remember relying on Gabo (why was that his name) and random sheep attacks that can fail isn't ideal.

Similarly in Xenogears there's a boss that has a move that freezes the game on emulators (or at least used to). To get past him you had to get lucky and just hope that the boss didn't use the move.

Sounds like emulating Shin Megami Tensei Nine. Yea only in Japan on the Xbox lawl did they get that far. Apparently a move used in the game can't be emulated so it just locks up the emulator.

Oh, I also forgot, the PS2 Tales of the Abyss unknown mode bosses. Literally all of them for the first 75% of the game I think

I usually find JRPG bosses satisfying if you simply have to beat them. If they have a low percentage unique drop that you have to soft reset for that's when it gets horrible. The one I remember most was trying to soft reset the Piranha Bean in Superstar Saga that Luigi fights solo (so it wasn't even that fun due to how basic it is) over 50 times because I didn't have that accessory that guarantees the rare drop and eventually gave in to going through the whole world to get enough beans to get that accessory. I wouldn't be surprised if you actually needed that accessory to get that drop.

I'm playing this again, and something similar happened to me last week. I planned on having him in my final 3, but those limit breaks make him objectively the worst character to use in the game.

ar tonelico 2 has a boss like this but on console. Like, the actual official english release of the game they forgot to translate one of the attack names or something and it crashes when the boss uses it. It also uses it after a fixed amount of time so it basically is an accidental timer on the fight lol

The final boss in Trails to Azure. It's a gauntlet boss of like 3 bosses and they all take incredibly long with the actual final boss also taking a long time. If you die you start over from the first boss. I was 2 hours into the fight my first playthrough and died.

The final boss of Evolution on Dreamcast was bullshit. The game has a stable and fair difficulty, but has an unnecessary spike near the end. You actually need to grind about 10-15 levels before fighting him. And you can't leave the dungeon to heal up once you've saved before him, so you're basically softlocked if you're underleveled.

I'm gonna say The Immortal One from Lost Odyssey. That boss was such a bitch. I did it once and will never do it again.
