My wife took two days off of work to play this game, shes been a Harry Potter fan since long before we met. Shes loving it so far, but shed love anything that allows her to explore the wizard of world so I dont think that says much.

The simple fact is that people who despise our existence care about hating us a lot more than our supposed allies care about supporting us, which obviously makes our lives a living hell as governments, encouraged by these vocal bigots without fear of any substantial opposition, try to legislate us out of existence and yeah we're fucking starved for some actual support for once as our supposed allies just whine in the sidelines.

My honest stance is I don't care if you wanna buy the Hogwarts game - under the condition that you're someone who actually does outwardly support trans rights, otherwise yeah I'm gonna be wary because I've been burnt too much by silence hiding someone's bigotry, or in the case of public figures, trying not to put off bigoted fans who support them which just allows their hatred to be normalized. The reality is that an incredibly few amount of people are actually substantively supportive of trans lives, they'll be fine with vague supportive statements but only ever actually pop up when showing support for trans lives gets in the way of their entertainment - be it a legacy celeb they've personally bonded to, or indeed their dream wizard sim game. We all make choices weighing our morals with how much we want something, but I really couldn't give half of a shit about cis folks being mad people are criticizing their choice to dismiss the influence derived from this franchise that has propped Rowling up into absolute royalty in the British press to campaign against our lives uncontested. Influence that pushes across the globe cited by legislators abroad and that Rowling herself has flaunted to counter any criticism.

If you're someone that's actually outspoken in favour of trans rights and against transphobes then truthfully your desire to play wizards isn't going to change my perception about you. Maybe if you do the dumb thing of trying to "justify" yourself with nonsense excuses when the simple truth is your wants just exceeded your morals - again, something we all do. But trying to justify that action as anything else is frankly putting blinders on to feel better about yourself. Go ahead and consume but don't expect a pat on the back about doing the thing you just wanted to do. Part of the fact that we all make these choices means we shouldn't have to pretend it's something else.

If you're not someone that stands up for trans rights then yeah obviously I'm not gonna think of you as an ally? Like that doesn't even have anything to do with Hogwarts, if you're not supportive of us then what do you even care that you aren't viewed as if you were? This is where my confusion rings with plum who routinely comes in to rattle on his "nuanced" views that always kicks in for obsessed whining against trans activism. Like my guy there was no universe where anyone was expecting you of all people to be turned off from something you like due to transphobia so why are you so outraged? Just play your game and literally nothing's gonna change.

The funny thing is I am leaning against buying the game. I don't like open world games.

I don't care if you don't play the game. I don't really care if you do play the game if you are acknowledging the moral quandary.

The difference between boycotting Joanne and boycotting Nestle is that the former makes one series about a wizard boy that's always been kinda mid and the latter makes roughly 1/6th of all packaged food in the entire world, but yes, people should absolutely boycott Nestle too

nestle is big and harder to avoid, honestly its just easier to boycott one persons stuff than a whole corporation. This is more comparable to not buying R Kelly albums than to boycotting every product of a huge corporation.

It's incredible easy to accidentally buy Nestle products, tons of stuff under their umbrella with little to no labeling at all.

Everyone has to set their own standards. Capitalism is so messy. Inevitably, no matter what you do, your money is probably going to someone terrible. Whether it's to fund JK Rowling's hate campaign, helping Walmart fund people who want to overturn the election, or helping Amazon squash unions. You can't spend $5.00 without some of it going somewhere you'd much rather it not. I think all we can really do is try to limit and counteract the bad.

I love when plum discovers the evils of capitalism and how the free market is not actually free due to consolidation as well as megacorporations buying out essential services.

Also loads of people stopped seeing Weinstein movies, thats part of why his company collapsed before he even went to prison. Regardless I think a lot of people dont actually know about the Rowling situation.

also, difficulty aside, I think its easier to just be sort of numb to Nestle or any other big corporations bad acts.
Like its basically impossible to exist in our society without giving money to some corporation thats exploiting people somewhere, and I guess it assuages some of that guilt to just write it off as the systems fault instead of taking personal responsibility for choosing to give money to Nestle or whoever else.

but JK Rowlings just one lady, and her actions are more visible and personal to people + they arent standard capitalism exploitation. Similarly thats why there was a very visible movement to boycott Chik-Fil-A for funding anti-gay organizations. Its not just about being bad, its about being bad in a nonstandard way that cant be written off as the cost of doing business.

Well, not playing a HP game is a pretty small impact on me, so I suppose it's the least I can do in solidarity with people who are impacted way more by Rowling's influence.

The article is good and a really useful framing of the issue for those unfamiliar. It is a repost of course and as such there are a few tings out of date, Tavistock vs. Bell was fortunately overturned among other things. It also understandably focuses on transphobic women (which is what Ill say, even TERF is too kind) when the evidence shows that women are significantly more supportive of trans rights than men are. Transphobia is largely driven by (a minority of) men. So these people who claim to be standing up for women are really just attacking other women to do the dirty work of bigoted men. Not exactly feminist at all, is it?

Most people have stopped supporting Cosby, at least publicly. They recognize his historical importance but don't continue to support him.

A good recent example is the Qatar world cup. Too many people (basically all non-Americans) never even considered boycotting it, because soccer is just easily more important to them than the human rights violations. For Americans it wasn't more important and many wanted to take a stand, but I think a lot of them eventually gave in to the global peer pressure.

Rowling leverages the HP property for royalties like crazy. Keep seeing people say the money doesn't matter to her but I dont buy it. If there is one thing rich assholes like it is money.

If you go by what happens after some of those games, Soccer is more important to some countries than human life period, considering how many people die in Soccer hooligan stampedes.

In the end, not a single country boycotted it so it was more important for everyone including Americans. What's weak about the controversy about this game is that it's ONLY about this game. Even though HP is a massive franchise that constantly makes millions of dollars in several other mediums. But game industry people and gamers take a very game-centric view here.

It's true that this game will make hundreds of millions, which is huge. But even if everyone was convinced not to buy the game, it wouldn't affect any of her other media due to the game-centric framing of the controversy. So at BEST she'll maintain 100% of her current income.

The goal really should be to teach everyone about who JKR is general, like Cosby, Epstein, etc. Not just hope they stumble across your article on a video game review site.

They still do since half of them were prob laid off after the game shipped, and the other half are underpaid/overworked. WB Games & JKR are really the only ones profiting here.

It's similar with movies in general, too. There are a lot of campaigns out there to boycott Scientologist and anti-vax stars, but most of them don't go that well (Top Gun Maverick earned over $700M in the US alone), since people prize entertainment over ethics.

As someone who would choose the Wizarding World as the backdrop for their coma if ever given that opportunity, I'm thoroughly enjoying this game, so far.

My wife is pretty much addicted at this point. She was supposed to login for a work meeting at 12:30 even though she had the day off and she completely lost track of time and forgot. Her supervisor knew why she had the day off though, and they all got a pretty big laugh out of it.

I bought Fata Morgana like a year ago along with a bunch of other Steam games but my backlog keeps getting in the way LOL. It is the last one of the batch of those Steam games though at least but now I've got Witch on the Holy Night, Fire Emblem Engage, and Three Hopes on deck. And you know Trails to Azure will be out by the time those are through lol.

No. She gets a set fee from Universal yearly and then a royalty for -everything- sold under those lands as well as near complete oversight of everything sold in those lands(you cant buy coke products for instance, since no royalty).

So feel free to go to Universal if this is acceptable. And if you dont want to give her any money, dont spend anything in the land.

I feel ya. I mean I completed every Three Hopes route and am sitting around 110 Hours into Engage nearing the end of my second back to back playthrough (which, you know, self inflicted) , so I know those games can eat up time lol.

I bought Holy Knight and somehow need to put time aside for that.
