adults are largely who they are due to the events that shaped them as children. And teachers have a significant impact on a child's life. It's ridiculous how paltry their salaries. Imagine how much better our society would be if teachers had the resources to truly make the impact they should be making on each individual student.

Just think if there were 10 student class sizes, a highly paid and qualified teacher to set a positive role model for the students, and numerous extracurriculars and electives to allow students to find passion.

But can't let that happen. That's only reserved for the elite and wealthy.

Idk but we're doing something wrong

Special needs teachers earn an average monthly salary of 38,600 kronor while for teachers aides the average is 24,300 kronor per month.

For comparison, the average salary in Sweden across all sectors was 34,600 kronor before tax in 2018.

and yeah i agree. Teachers play so many roles. Beyond teaching they're therapists. And therapists make an ass ton of money.

This is true, but also partly due to turnover. A skilled, experienced teacher is actually hard to come by as most of them leave the profession within the first few years. This means that typical teacher is an inexperienced teacher.

Thats only in the US though, right?

Ive been in offered jobs all over the world in private schools and they all paid considerably more than working for the state.

However, it is worth noting that there are a lot of private schools that hire unqualified teachers and pay them less.

Most teachers are unionized and have a lifetime pension, in the public system. They get more time off than the people paying their salaries through taxes. School boards run the schools like businesses not educational facilities, milking communties dry. I'd say they have it pretty good, considering schools are glorified daycares anymore. Lots of great teachers, but are few and far betweem. Education system needs rebuilt from the ground up. Why are property owners the only people directly taxed (in most cases) in a public school district?

Where I come from the time off thing often gets thrown up at teachers, despite the fact that they dont get paid for it.

Also, are you trying to say that schools are glorified daycares or that they arent?

Most school districts spread the teachers salary over 12 months so they get a pay check over the summer. And I am saying they are glorified daycares.

Yeah, we get paid over the summer. But we dont get paid for the summer. When people talk about us getting loads of paid holidays, we dont, as a general rule. We do, however, work a lot of unpaid hours.

As for them being like daycares, thats absolutely insane. The amount of accountability that teachers are subjected to has increased steadily every year since I started teaching.

I am a former teacher that was paid well. How much you are paid depends on your educational background, how many years of experience you have, and how much time you're willing to put into professional development (training, conferences, tutoring, etc.) outside of work hours.

I am a teacher who is paid well and disagree with this. How much you are paid depends on whether or not you are willing to teach in a fee-paying school, followed by the things that you said. That first step is more or less essential.

A teacher with only a BA or BS has limited earning potential even if they make it to the final column of the salary schedule. A fee-paying school does not guarantee more pay for a teacher and has no job security as there is no teacher's union.

I have a masters degree in developmental psychology. When working for state schools, that did not have any impact on my salary. Working for a fee-paying school now, the people with those kinds of qualifications are paid more.

While I have no union anymore, Im also no longer having to worry about only ever having a one year contract at a time, something which was all too common in state schools in the UK.

It's different here in the US for public schools. Every teacher is placed in a certain column on the salary schedule based on education level. A new teacher with a BA/BS would be in the lowest column making the bare minimum, whereas a teacher with a MA/MS would be placed a couple columns higher and make more money. Even further would be if they had a PhD/EdD.

Every school district is different when it comes to job security, but the district I was in has over 300,000 students and nowhere close to enough teachers. Job security was pretty much guaranteed after you finished the three-year probationary period.

I feel much more secure in my job now than I ever did at home.

The pay scale for teachers in the UK has everybody start on the same salary and go up increments at the same pace. Experience teaching is valued far more than qualifications in that regard. However, the gap between the starting salary and the top of the scale has been closing in recent years, as pay rises have been applied to the lower increments but not the higher ones.

You could argue that a higher level of qualification might see you climb the ladder into leadership positions there, but Ive worked under several head teachers and never met one with any more than a bachelors.
