I snoozed on it because people told me it was a hiking simulator.

I'm working through my post Christmas backlog of games and have some work. Still have post game GOW, Horizon Forbidden West, and Returnal to play.

Just finished Demon's Souls and I'm considering which of these I want to tackle next, and I remembered Deatb Stranding is also in the stack. I also just saw that it won GOTY.

What can the fans of the series actually tell me about it? I will not be playing online btw.

I personally think it's terrible.

it does have combat, but it's probably the worst part of the game, mechanically speaking, IMO.

besides that, the writing is bad, the characters are two-dimensional, and even though the game has this interesting concept (about the afterlife), Kojima deals with it in the most "academic" and boring way.

...with that said, that's just my view, and it's one of those things you have to experience for yourself due to how different it is.

This. Also the story can grip you once you get into it. Its got this amazing relaxing quality to it as well. It can be breathtaking on a 4K screen too

People rag on it for the mail delivery aspect, but it's rather addicting. Planning your route, getting your vehicle in order, making sure you can carry all that crap on foot, having weapons along to fight off baddies, the tools you need to get around the terrain, etc. Sometimes other players leave helpful things like ladders laying around; sometimes they have more substantial buildings you can use, like timefall (think corrosive rain) shelters.

The story might be hit or miss, but just wandering around, building stuff for yourself and others, developing your gadgets and weaponry...it's very addicting. I still wonder how my [method of conveyance] network I built on a mountain is doing. I heard that the timefall won't corrode your stuff if you haven't played in awhile, so I hope that's true.

Absolutely loved it. Can't wait for the sequel.

I hope they completely remove the combat and focus on enhancing the traversal even more in the sequel.

Loved it tbh. Its also the best strand type game out there

One of the greatest and most unique games ever made. It's not for everyone though.

The online interaction is so non-invasive I'm not sure why you would turn the online elements off.

I don't pay for a PSN account. Is it free? Demon's Souls wasn't so I assume everything costs now.

You mean you don't have PS+? You don't need PS+ to play Death Stranding online.

Most unrealistic game of all time. There will never be a point in history where everybody stays inside and society relies on those brave enough to venture outside to make deliveries while risking a deadly disease.

Man, those complaints about the game only took about a year to age poorly.

It's always one end of the spectrum for this game. Either it is a masterpiece or the game fucking sucks, rarely do i hear that it's middle of the road. I did get the game free on epic store so I'll eventually try it.

is there much horror aspects? i want to play this game but im a baby

kinda feels like its weird just for the sake of being weird. I wasnt invested in any of the characters or story
and none of the gameplay is any fun to me. it feels like doing chores

but at the same time, alot of people think the game is amazing. theyre allowed to have different opinions even though theyre wrong :p

Death Stranding is basically a movie or potential episodic series (a weird movie or episodic series, sure, but there's still a potential market for that kind of thing) that tries too hard to be a video game and forgets that video games are supposed to be, y'know, fun to play.

lemme put it this way: if you like walking, this game is for you.

Going off this, yes I'd say you'll enjoy it.

The story is a little bizarre for my taste, but everything else is great

You are given cargo to deliver.

You look at your map and plot out the best and safest way to get there. You have to take terrain into account. If you try to walk up and down steep mountains you'll probably tire, fall over and damage your cargo. But maybe you can take that shortcut if you stock up on ladders and ziplines.

Now how do you take that cargo? Do you strap it all on your back? Take a little trolley? Load it in a van which potentially restricts you to roads?

Hopefully this is a smoother run than last time where your cargo washed down a river and you had to scramble to get it back.

If this sounds cool or terrible depends on if you'll like the game or not. I thought it was neat. Open worlds in games rarely feel like a trek. It does here. The world itself is your obstacle.

I just played the Directors Cut recently. It's ok, can be addictive, I'd say it's worth a try

I really didn't think I'd like it but picked it up for $20. Worth it imo

It really opens up once you get about 30 hours in. Just hang in there for at least 30 hours.
