Started on Hack Slash, heard it was good, but the covers always have these dominatrix leather bound women on it and thought it was gonna be sex heavy.

It's nothing like I expected, a girl finds a friendly giant that wears a gas mask that follows her around. They team up and kill slashers, each book is a self contained story about them tracking and killing a serial killer. Each book has a different artist so far, one issue had a few comic creators in it as characters like Skottie Young.

It runs from a religious psycho killing spring break teenagers to weird mutated and supernatural killers.

It has some humor, a lot of gore and profanity, no nudity so far. The first two omnibusses are on comixology so I got 800+ pages to burn through.

Read the first volume of Chew also, about a detective that can solve crimes by eating things at the scene, from food to severed fingers. Another good, dark comedy so far.

On vol 3 of Vox Machina, vol 2 of Rat Queens, vol 3 of I Hate Fairyland and about 11 books into Hack/Slash. Wife got into this recently so I'm buying a lot more and reading the stuff she's digging.

Gonna bitch again about the lack of an Image comics app.

Currently reading The Expanse #6. I like it.

I finished Happening by Annie Ernaux (Nobel prize laureate). It was fine. A bit interesting. Not gonna read more from her though, her writing wasn't very gripping to me.

I read also The Three-Body Problem by Cixin Liu. This book has been hyped to infinity and honestly? I thought it was pretty mid. Not a big fan at all.

Just the first book. I might finish the series eventually. It was just a big mismatch between my expectations based on the buzz, and then it felt like a decent book but not much more than that? I have some gripes about it where the book kinda loses me. Other parts are good.

Yeah. I'm fine with it being mostly setup. And I kinda like the premise. What bugged me a little was characters and character motivations. It just didn't feel believable that Three-Body had the power to essentially indoctrinate a bunch of intellectuals to the extent that they want to exterminate humanity. And, well, that whole sidetrack of Wong Miao losing himself in a video game while the rest of his life was pretty tense. It brought me out of it a little bit. But yeah, since the premise is pretty neat I might still read books 2 and 3 eventually.

Finished Spriggan. The historical/archaeological elements were cool, art was good, characters OK. As previously mentioned, the Hitler/Nazi stuff was either weird at best and what the hell am I reading at worst.

Not sure if I'll read another manga or change mediums again. A decision for tomorrow I suppose!

Ive been doing a 5 book readathon on the Key ark Duscord this month, reading all self published stuff. I really enjoyed The Assassin of Grins and Secrets by K.E. Andrews amd Seekers: The Winds of Change by Troy Knowlton. Right now Im reading The Builders by Daniel Polanski. Im about halfway through, and so far it seems akin to a cross between The Count of Monte Cristo and the Fieval movies, as its a bunch of anthropomorphic animals that seem to be setting out on a big revenge quest. Im really enjoying it.

Also, everyone needs to read Christopher Ruocchios Sun Eater series including novellas and short story collections ASAP, as hes fucking brilliant and criminally under known.

I finished The Savage Detectives, by Roberto Bolano. Structurally it's fascinating; the bulk of the book is set up like an oral history of sorts, and you only see the central characters from the brief perspectives of others. Really cool in that regard.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

Paz comes up a lot in this book (along with a lot of other Latin American writers and poets).

There are a lot of different narrators, and the text is written as though it's being spoken aloud to you, rather than written, like someone has just asked them what they remember about this character. Each passage is headed up by the speaker's name, location, and the month/year. Some of these are 10-20 pages, and take up a whole chapter, but most passages are 2-3 pages.

The central characters of the book (one of whom is based on the author) are part of a literary group that is vocally anti-Paz, but most other characters just laugh off that stance as obviously silly, a sort of youthful rebellion against establishment. One of the passages later on in the book is narrated by Paz's (fictional) secretary, and he briefly becomes a character in addition to a literary reference point.

I have not read 2666, but I would recommend Savage Detectives.

So looking for comic or graphic novel recs. Wife loved the Vox Machina show, so got her the first few volumes and she liked them, but didn't love them. Tried Rat Queens and she's into that more, looking for more Dungeons and Dragons style books with adult themes and humor.

I read this one a while back. I liked it a lot, but it kinda dragged a bit in part 2. I started 2666 but lost track. Maybe I'll get back to it at some point.
