I say all the time the left gets into discussions over how to do things because we have brain cells to rattle around unlike fascists who just group think.

I know it's a tangent and I don't want to derail us, but I'd caution against this thinking. The tendency to other the right wing and treat them as incompetents being led by the nose discounts the calculating nature of a lot of malicious actors who very carefully sow discontent and create recruitment opportunities.

I get what you're saying though, and you're right, obviously, that ultimately change has to come with gradual movement within the system as the window shifts to us being unremovable. Someday we'll be just as accepted as LGB people and trans flag capitalism will be everywhere and there'll be fuck-you-I-got-mine class traitors coming out of the woodwork, and that only happens when a tipping point is reached.

Did you see that new-ish Alt-Right Playbook video that came out a few months ago? "The Cost of Doing Business"? I think about that a lot when these issues come up. That and the political nuances of the Nazis' growth in Weimar Germany, when they were enabled by other parties in exchange for perceived political gains. I don't have any answers to wring out of those thoughts, only the knowledge that we're currently expendable and that's probably not going to change without significant support from allies.

I will again go to my point that the right wing need to be a lot less careful when they control nearly all news media. The left (and by that I mean centre to left) are held to an absolutely absurd standard by the press while the right get free pass after free pass.

The media also does shape public opinion. The backslide in trans views in the UK and US strongly correlates with coverage of transgender issues by the right wing media.

Thankss, yeah it's not the first I've from people gaining listening in the quieter background but always glad to here it. I'm certainly not free from getting irritated and giving up at times, and I typically don't bother speaking up until I see the discussion already playing out without much trans perspective, but the understandings that are made make it all worth it.

The BBC was actually called out fairly recently for a pretty miserable record on transphobia. They're pretty much in the business of astroTERFing.

I understand the issue. This video game and the people that worked on it or want to enjoy it shouldn't have been made part of the issue.

Difficult question to answer. The BBC used to be very good with some issues. Worst of all being the (legally mandated) need to show both sides of an argument no matter how absurd. Has gotten a lot worse since David Cameron packed the board with Tories and a lot of mistakes started getting through. Like when they mistakenly edited a clip to completely change a negative audience reaction to Boris Johnson into a positive one or mistakenly published an anti-trans article citing a very bad source. Still better than most UK news sources unfortunately. I do support public broadcasting in principle and would never want to see it privatised. However the organisation does need reform.

The BBC has taken a hard turn into trash in recent years IIRC. I used to know more of the background on why (I think there actually was a pivotal moment there or something) but I don't feel like doing the research on it again to refresh myself.

But yes among other things they've been platforming anti-trans views, often uncontested, of late to my knowledge and it was an intentional decision from the top brass.

It should be noted in the interest of objectivity the BBC did apologise for the transphobic article twice. Once a few days layer when it was found that the primary source was openly transphobic and accused of sexual misconduct they edited the article to remove her. Some months later they apologised again following a review and admitted the article was totally inaccurate with a misleading headline. However, it is not all good news as they also said they can keep platforming transphobic people as unlike homophobia or racism there is controversy about what is transphobic which is obviously ridiculous. The article is still there to see as well.

I think I've been asked the same question in therapy myself (about a completely different fear though) and didn't really have an answer for it. But that was for a pretty intangible fear. If it was about something like a fear of spiders (which I had as a kid) my answer would be more like "nothing would happen, my fear is 100% unreasonable". This is potentially straying off-topic but I'm curious to hear your thoughts if you're up to posting about it!

I'm honestly not sure. Never really engaged with that specific kind of hatred before. I don't really speculate with clients so it's kind of hard to try to do that. I take their lead. I'll ask my wife, she is also a therapist and may have an idea or at least we can talk it out (eidt: I'll do this early next week btw, her and I have a rule about not "talking shop" on the weekend)

Also that answer isn't actually that specific part answering. That's you answering. If your fear of spiders was a person, and it could answers it wouldn't say nothing. It would have answer as to why it was so afraid.

The hate and fear these people have is irrational, but it isn't to that specific part. At least that is how I would look at it

They platformed Lily Cade, a lesbian porn star with a history of sexually assaulting women in bathrooms, to talk up about the dangers of trans rapists in an article that goes on to cite a survey from anti-trans organization Get The L Out, that in its own outline quotes Janice Raymond's description that the very act of transition is rape (an author that in 1979 wrote, "I contend that the problem of transsexualism would be best served by morally mandating it out of existence")

Note, the BBC in previous years had reported on Get The L Out as a hate group during reporting on Pride protest disruptions

After major pushback editors repeatedly came out in its defence until the BBC put out an official statement doing just that, citing their duty of "impartiality" to hear "all sides*". It was also revealed that the author conducted a video interview with Chelsea Poe, who warned her about Lily Cade, but because she didn't provide the salacious anti-trans rhetoric Lowbridge was looking for she didn't put it in the article which instead claims "we tried to reach out to trans people but none of them wanted to speak to me".

The article remained unedited at this point until Lily Cade then went on a violent genocidal screed calling for the death and rape of trans people and their allies on her blog. The change to the article removed her contribution and noted only this:

"[removed] a contribution from one individual in light of comments she has published on blog posts in recent days"

yep that's right, they admit to removing content due to "comments" from their sources blog. Not a mention that she's a rapist, not a mention that her comments were calling for genocide, not even naming the individual they removed so people can look up what Lily Cade had said, just this is all the due journalist diligence from the BBC.

Pressure continued and their May 2022 response is to admit that the article had "breached the BBC's standards of accuracy in two ways", but that it was still a "legitimate piece of journalism overall"

Our media is not at all controlled by right wingers. Its actually so far left that a bunch of bad faith actors exploited this (think Alex Jones or Breitbart conspiracy types) to generate massive audiences, so what we have now are two fringe minorities selling outrage and trying to be the actual story instead of just reporting news, both of which claim to be a counterculture even though the mass majority of the population thinks theyre all garbage.

I don't know why all the pro-boycott folks are saying "You shouldn't play this game, it sucks!" If boycotting is about taking a moral stand, it could be Breath of the Wild or Elden Ring-level quality and you still shouldn't play it. If the game sucks, then boycotting it says nothing about your actual solidarity with trans people.

He got super mad because I called him out on posting transphobic shit on the politics board, and then I called him out on saying Damar Hamlin, the NFL player who collapsed on the field due to a freak accident of a hit, collapsed due to "taking the vaccine." People keep saying this but it makes perfect sense to me. The exact point is that it shouldn't even be a "sacrifice" to not play it, because it looks super bad. Yeah maybe this "cheapens the boycott" or whatever but the idea is that a boycott shouldn't even be necessary in the first place.

I think Mermaids is a good one. Others probably know a lot of other charities though. But it's one Rowling specifically hates (or maybe it was Linehan. Or both) that specifically helps trans kids.

The Trevor Project is a general LGBT thing, good group from what I know. If you want to donate to something that focuses specifically on trans support, there's the Trans Lifeline, the NCTE, the Transgender Law Center. I don't have direct experience with any of these, I just know they're pretty large. If you live in a big city, there are likely local charities, shelters, clinics, etc. that could use the support.

i know there's a lot of room for improvement in my posts, but the fact that ulti has blocked me for years is a sign that i'm on the right track.
