It was my understanding they pay the character actors a pretty decent sum and only have them out for like 30-40 mins at a time

They get on average $21 an hour

https://www.glassdoor.com/Hourly-Pay/Walt-Disney-Company-Character-Performer-Hourly-Pay-E717_D_KO20,39.htm

Almost twice Florida's minimum wage, which is $11

https://www.dol.gov/agencies/whd/minimum-wage/state#fl

Not great, but not what I would consider horrible if they only do have to go out for 30 minutes at a time.

I wonder if that represents an average between the full costumed performers and the face character performers. My understanding from people that worked there is that face characters generally receive higher pay, but that was from a long time ago when a friend who played Tigger was auditioning to play Milo from Atlantis.

There was a Youtuber who had a popular animated series about his time back in the 2000s when he worked for Disney World. According to him, the face characters were treated like royalty compared to all the other employees. They got their own private break room with a TV and stocked with food. They also went on paid retreats to help improve their improv skills.

It makes sense when you consider how much more stringent their requirements were for face characters, although I would have to imagine they have lowered the requirements given their current staffing issues.

I worked as an intern for a company that had a costumed mascot. While I was there, the person who was usually the mascot was unavailable, and they were looking for someone to fill in. The pay was almost double my usual intern hourly pay (which was already pretty good for an internship 10 years ago), and I only had to be in the suit for half an hour at a time.

As far as they told me, there's a mascot workers union, which sets these standards. So mascot workers don't have it too bad. I had a lot of fun and was paid well.
