Every trooper card I hear about makes me want Ishin less.

What happened with the localization of this series has been a disaster. It's like I've been punished for being a fan since the beginning. The PSP games were a fun way for me to practice Japanese when I first started learning. I'd rather we get a good translation and removed content like the original version of 3 then whatever has been happening with this series recently.

No I mean I actually know of her specifically. I've seen her before. And she is actually pretty famous even before vtubers. She didn't always have an anime persona but she has always called herself nyanners. And she made that "what are we going to do on the bed, onii chan?" song

from the trailers, it seems like you use them to do special attacks. why everything has to be cards, i don't know. even dead island 2's using cards for its character progression

AFAIK they're just like the Destiny Talismans from Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise (which is a FOTNS game that plays exactly like Yakuza games and even has a Cabaret Club manager style minigame in it).

Vtubers are big right now. The Japanese version of Sonic Frontiers had a tie in with a Japanese Vtuber. I dont think it's in the English version though

I've heard the name but never watched her streams. I'm assuming she's streamed something from the series before, though. Makes sense to get some big names in there who promote the series. I saw CohhCarnage has a card, too.

Sega specifically has been doing Vtuber cross promotions. PSO2 has a Nijisanji costume cross promotion, Korone had DLC in the Japanese version of Sonic Frontiers.

Pretty much this.

Trooper Cards existed in the original version of Ishin. They were just confined to the "Battle Dungeon" side content. In this release, you can use them anywhere, or not use them at all.

In fact with this set of Western based cards, they're a separate download so you can just not download them if you don't want to look at an anime cat girl or a black man.

I don't like when people scribble all over an existing art piece to try to make it easier to understand. It's not just the "Heckin' Pupper" "Pure Cinnamon Roll" dialogue they add but actually editing out language and imagery they find "problematic" as well. I don't know why we can't just receive the product the way it was originally written and designed.

Removal of Rising Sun flags in 3 & 4 & removal of a side quest with a cross dresser in 3 which was only done in the remaster. A couple lines of dialogue changed too they found problematic like one character calling another "gay". It's not a surprise with the fanbase it's cultivated but at least only side quests are getting removed I guess. Whenever I hear the overly localized American phrases though it takes me WAY out of the game. Don't understand why they can't just translate it straight. It's a game that is taking place in Japan they don't need to say "Holy shit balls!"

So I feel you've answered your own question on why those edits are made. With the approval of the parent company, I might add.

Because there's no such thing as a "straight translation" from one language to another, and there never was.

Localization is meant to make the dialogue culturally recognizable to the target audience. The target audience in this case is not folks who have already studied a considerable amount of Japanese cultural context.

We can always be critical of the end result, but to imply that there's a "straight translation" of Japanese to English is to out yourself as only having a surface understanding of what it actually means to localize.

Like hell, there's no straight translation of "dozo yoroshiku" or "otsukaresama". Extremely common Japanese phrases.

Cyric, I already know you can't handle unfiltered art from the Fire Emblem thread where we talked before. I'm not going to try to change your mind I just wish you'd understand you don't need to edit these things for me; I and a lot of other people can handle this. I just wish more games would be like River City Girls and let us adults play the original and the kiddy grade one is there for you; kind of unfair we have to settle for the edited product only.
