It seems to have flown under the radar, to the point that I keep forgetting it exists (especially as physical carts seem to be rare here), but I saw a copy up for sale today and was wondering if people think it's worth picking up.

it's probably my favorite smt mainline game

if you are a stickler for performance/frame rate you might find it unplayable, but I really liked the exploration aspects and soundtrack

I had a lot of fun with it for awhile, but I got worn out on it and never finished it. Too little story focus and I got tired of navigating the confusing layout in the third area. Hearing that the next area was apparently a rather frustrating dungeon probably didn't help matters. The bosses also felt too tanky and each one just felt like a war of attrition, with the biggest threat being running out of MP items. Overall I ended up being pretty disappointed. I much preferred 4 and 4A.

It has its flaws, mostly around story and characters.

It is the best mainline SMT from a gameplay perspective (Performance aside, because yeah that's not great) and great soundtrack, but the weakest in every other aspect IMO..

I like the story and characters better than SMT3 for the most part. And yeah, the gameplay rules. It's just plain fun to play. A good game all around, though I didn't love it.

Gameplay is good, but I found myself cheesing out towards the end with DLC stuff since there's a lot of repetition in both structure and environments. Story is bad, especially since it had a lot of potential which makes it all the worse when it doesn't deliver. Game runs like ass on the Switch, struggling for 20fps sometimes.....

I mean...it's more than the sum of it's parts, OK? I still recommend it even a lot even though it kinda sounds like it sucks when you lay it all out like that.

It's a really good core but it's held back by performance and the end dragging extremely.

If it didn't have those performance and pacing issues it would probably easily be the best SMT game? But as it stands they sucked a lot of joy out of the game for me...it's worth checking out for sure though.

edit: Actually, it's missing some true fuck-off asshole dungeons like Nocturne had, that's the other thing it's lacking. Very few traditional dungeons at all, which is weird!

The consistency of these dungeons is why I never finished Nocturne.

Echoing everyone else, the gameplay loop is addicting and the story is ass. Still would highly recommend.

I'm personally offended that my favorite human main character designed ended up basically not even being a character.

With a cast this small, you'd think everyone would get to matter somehow.
