I have looked at the data and the balance of power is trending toward evil. Behold.

DMCI - Pretty good. He doesn't do all the flips and Royal Guards in this one but the difficulty holds up and also devil trigger is a total power trip in this game.
DMCII - Meh. You gotta change disc to use the barehanded moves in this one. In the other games you press a button.
DMCIII - THE good. - DMC3 a fuckin cool
DMCIV - Pretty good. - The gameplay is really good but you only get half a game to try and divide up between five characters.
DmC: Devil May Cry - Pretty bad. People who like this are all in fact Tameem.
DMC5 - Meh. This is the one with all the microtransactions and that weird thing where Vergil kills loads of people and they just casually forgive him and laugh it off at the end.
DMC: Peak of Combat - THE Bad. Gacha.

Here is a silver lining though. The balance maintains itself quite well. Look at the order, Good, bad, good, good, bad, bad, bad.
As you can see we are due for a good one, meaning DMC6 will most likely be extremely good and they will probably bring back Agni&Rudra and also take away the style switcher.

This. 5 is nowhere near as polarizing.

1 > 3 = DmC > 4 > 2

I really didn't care for DMC 5's story. It was sooooo boring. The gameplay is good, but man I wasn't invested at all.

2 is terrible, contender for worst game ever
3 is great/amazing
4 is good the first half, bad the second half, overall average

2 great games with 4 bad/ ok games.

The DMCV Deluxe upgrade DLC for extra Nero weapons and the pre-vis cutscenes with the little figures and guy pretending to be the crow was worth it. DmC wasn't "terrible" it was just incredibly cringey. Virgil originally had a FEDORA they took out in the Definitive Edition and Donte was just annoying and unlikable. Completely unlike the original Dante concept of "Cool without smoking or swearing".

It was like some late GenXer who thought Tom Green "Bum Bum Song (Lonely Swedish)" was hilarious, that also though old CKY Skateboard footage set to "96 Quite Bitter Beings" was "sick" was a major game designer at Ninja Theory.

Hideaki Itsuno is a legend. That microtransaction bs for red orbs was most likely something some fuckhead executive forced into the game. So what does he do? He makes an ingame weapon that specializes in farming red orbs lol. And a sick dance number to introduce said item. DMCV was a wet dream come true.

Kind of tempted to ask how 5 pushed the genre forward.

Big fan of menuing as Nero? Liked how a handful of the levels had to be really basic so V could play them? Greatly prefer paid reskins to unlockable costumes? Went gaga for that bit in mission 14 where V is forced to walk in slow motion?

1st game built the genre out of tape and rocks. 3rd game gave us styles. Hell, 4 gave Dante 5 styles at once.
What's 5's big contribution? The return of Majin Devil Trigger and continues swapped out for a pay to revive thing?

Honestly, I don't even count DMC because that was developed by Ninja Theory, not Capcom.

So not counting that, the only miss the series had was DMC 2

He's talking about the fact that you listed both 2 and 5 as "meh". But 2 is the worst game in the series by a large margin.

V gameplay is more of a nudge forward than a push. You slide around for infinite invuln frames. Hold the gun button. Devil Trigger doesn't let you play most of the time unless you wanna get on Nightmare's shoulder for purposes other than making him do the big laser.

DMC5 Dante moves slower than DMC4 Dante, has one less style and has SDT as the designated end point of all his combos. The Kalina Ann laser has horrible end lag because they want you to SDT. King Cerberus auto combos are begging for an SDT, Caveliere is slow and lame and it's not hard to work out the best way to offset that. He shuffles around getting easy meter from the new RG or alternating moves until he gets his SSS and the win button activates.

4 gave you distortion and turned you loose on the unsuspecting reused bosses. 3 gave you a choice between DT, DT burst, time slow and a shadow clone as far as meter usage goes.
Even 2 wanted you to play chicken with your meter, wait til your health is low to use it. Didn't work but you see the idea.
Almost sounds like a regression to the DMC1 build meter -> power trip meta.

Dmc 5 is probably better than 4, especially with Vergil.

I don't like how dmc 5 is kinda floaty. It killed my enjoyment of the game. Also noticed that I had to play a bit slower or some inputs won't go off I think related to jump cancel animation or something. I forgot what the ppl on the discord said.
