I know there's the Black Waltz'z, and the fiends, and the final boss... but that's about it

yes. FF7 is full of memorable bosses, FF1... only has 4 bosses, FF3 and 5 are full of gimmick bosses - half the bosses in FF8 need to be remembered so you don't miss any Draws

I remember some of the bosses, including the big hunt scene. I don't think it was better or worse than most other numbered FF games in that regard.

I also remember Zorn and Thorn and Taharka. I think it's partly because I played it in my adult years. I tend to remember the games I played during childhood better.

Other than Midgar bosses (cuz of the remake), I remember the ... dolphin thing, demon wall, red dragon, all the Weapons, Hojo, Proud Clod, CARRY ARMOUR and the Wutai lords... and that one bug that has Trine... Materia Keeper I think (and Master Gi)

...I'm sure there's more, but those are the ones I remember offhand

I think FF2 suffers from this the most out of the pre-2000s games. A lot of the games have bosses that are just "oh no, there's a monster behind us!" or something, and 2 has the most of those, I think. IX also has quite a few of those, but it's hardly the only one that does so, and like most of them, the bosses that aren't like that are the easiest to remember.

You know which game is great at using mostly relevant bosses? FFIV. Almost every single boss is either story-related or has some sort of cut-scene+important gimmick related to and and/or introduces an important character until you get to the final dungeon, where it has a bunch of gear guarding optional bosses. I think I could just outright list every one of them right now if I tried.

After having finally got around to beating FF9 recently I don't understand why its fans are so ardent. I think the game is mostly appropriately rated in general (a solid, somewhat narratively uneven, late-console entry in a genre that was on the decline) but fans that insist it is criminally underrated are...not correct.

Probably stems from 9 being comparatively "forgotten" compared to 7 while generally being more liked by the fanbase than 8. I personally consider 9 to be among the best but I typically see it rated appropriately. 9 is well-balanced in terms of having a decent story, solid characters, cool cutscenes, and enjoyable sidequests. It makes sense that it's a fan-favorite.

My main complaint about FF9 is the massive interstitial times (the non-loading times such as battle and zone transitions)... but the PC version lets you time skip through those

These days an emulator will let you time skip as well.

You don't remember the Lifa Tree boss, the Soulcage?

i loved the game more for the story, world, and music. none of the enemies really felt memorable other than that random ass zombie whale for some reason.
